Use these steps to create links that make sense to all users—especially people using screen readers who often scan a page by jumping through links. This supports WCAG 2.2 AA best practices for understandable, navigable content.
Type the words you want users to click (example: View Full TWU Policy).
Select/highlight that text.
Click the link icon in the toolbar (or press Ctrl+K on Windows / Cmd+K on Mac).
Paste the URL (or search Drive/Sites content if the link box supports it).
Select Apply (or press Enter) to insert the link.
Review the link text to confirm it clearly describes the destination.
Make link text unique and specific. Users should know the destination without surrounding context.
Indicate file type when linking to documents (PDF, DOCX, PPTX) and optionally page count.
Keep link text short but meaningful (avoid long sentences as links).
Don’t rely on color alone. Links should be visually identifiable (underline is best).
Check embedded tools. If a link opens a third-party tool, confirm it supports keyboard and screen readers.
