On February 5th, 2025, I had the pleasure of being invited by our enthusiastic Grade 5 teacher, Mr. Li, to join him and his son for an afternoon bike ride around Hemei. It turned out to be the perfect day to explore more of this charming township, which I was still getting to know.
We visited several interesting spots, including a colorful, umbrella-themed café. I was surprised to learn that the café was once part of a factory that made umbrellas—an industry for which Hemei is apparently well known.
As we cycled through the area, Mr. Li pointed out many of the traditional brick homes that have stood the test of time, offering a glimpse into the town’s rich history and architecture. I also got to learn about local plants and crops, and even discovered the location of the town’s recycling plant—something I wouldn't have found easily on my own.
One of the best parts of the ride was being introduced to hidden cycling paths that don’t show up clearly on Google Maps. As someone who loves biking, I was thrilled to discover these new routes and enjoy the fresh air while learning more about the place I’m living in.
It was a lovely day filled with good company, local stories, and a deeper connection to Hemei. I’m grateful to Teacher Li for sharing his knowledge and making me feel more at home here.
