International Field Experience Blog
I will be teaching abroad and completing my international field experience in Finland from November 1-16, 2022. You'll find several resources pertaining to Finland and my daily experience in that country on this webpage.
Finland is ranked number one in multiple categories such as education, literacy, stability, safety, governance, and happiness. Finland also ranks in the top 5 in many other categories as well. These rankings have stood the test of time.
First Day, November 2, 2022
My first day in Helsinki, Finland. The first picture is of me and some fellow Fulbrighters getting off the airplane, and the second picture is me with two Finland Fulbright Program Coordinators: Heidi Tiainen and Tarja Mykra. I met a lot of people from around the country.
Our hosts wasted no time and gave us this document in order to teach us about their language. We will have an exam based on these words on the last day.
Second Day, November 3, 2022
I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Terhi Molsa, the CEO for the Fulbright Finland Foundation. I asked questions and made comments about how meaningful professional development encourages teachers to participate in them. I also had an opportunity to ask her about the role the Lutheran Church plays in the country.
In the second picture, we had three guest speakers discuss the different levels of the Finnish Education System: national, municipal, and school levels. I asked questions about how the nation helps immigrants, specifically, Finnish Language Learners (FLLs), in developing their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Towards the end of the day, I swam in a very cold lake and later experienced the Finnish sauna. It was fun and very relaxing.
Third Day, November 4, 2022
I had the opportunity to meet with Ismo-Olav Kjaldman at Leppavaaran Lukio Upper Secondary School. It was a pleasure speaking with him on many different topics: FLLs, SPED students, the Sami People, schoolwide structure, school food, discipline, degree requirements, and matriculation.
I had the opportunity to visit three different classes while I was at Leppavaran. I first visited a psychology course where the students were learning about Attribution Theory. The second class that I visited was Religion III, where students were presenting about eastern religions. I learned that Religion I and II are requirements for graduation.
I had the pleasure of meeting an Italian delegation from the Erasmus Program who were also observing the upper secondary school. They are from an arts school and they visited Finland in order to take back knowledge and best practices.
It was my first time going to a Ringette game with my fellow Fulbrighters. Finland played against Canada and won 8-2. It was a lot of fun. Ringette is a non-contact winter team sport played on ice hockey rinks using ice hockey skates. It is a women's sport and instead of a hockey puck, a hollow ring is used in its place.
The stadium was packed and the people were energetic. A lot of American music was being played throughout the game.
Fourth Day, November 5, 2022
On the fourth day, we traveled to the Finnish Nature Center in Espoo. It is one of 41 national nature parks in the country. I'm pointing to where we're at in the map.
Our nature guide for the tour was Kirsi Kallio. She did a great job teaching us about the different animals that inhabit the reserve and the Finnish efforts taken to preserve the park system.
After Kirsi gave us a lesson about the reserve, we took a hike in the park, exploring the different species of plants and trees present there.
Towards the end of our hike, we visited a Lavvu, or tipi, which is inspired by ones used by the Sami People.
One our guides, Inari Ahokas, brought some homemade dough from home for us to cook over the campfire.
It tasted like dough bread. We also had a drink called Glögi, which is a hot spiced wine in Finland.
My new teacher friends and I saying goodbye to the nature reserve after a long hike.
Fifth Day, November 6, 2022
Sibelius is one of Finland's greatest composers.
Here's a group picture in front of his statue. He wrote Finlandia, which can be listened to here.
These organ pipes are made of stainless steel and were the design winner the Sibelius Memorial.
This is the Senate Square in Helsinki, the political capital of the country. Behind me is the Government Palace, which houses the prime minister's office.
My fellow Fubrighters and me with the Senate Square in the background.
This grey house was built in 1757 and it's the oldest building of central Helsinki.
This is a statue of Alexander II, who was Czar of Russia from 1855-1881. He oversaw many reforms, which gave Finland more autonomy and is thus viewed positively.
This is the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral of Helsinki. Lutheranism is the official religion of Finland.
We took a group picture on the steps leading up to the Lutheran Cathedral.
Reindeer is a staple food in Finnish cuisine. It was my first time having it and it was delicious.
We had the opportunity to be hosted by a Fulbright Alumna, Tuija Kae and her husband, for a meet and greet at her house. It was a lot of fun and we exchanged our experiences with each other over blueberry pie.
Sixth Day, November 7, 2022
We traveled to Joensuu from Helsinki, a 5 hour bus ride. Joensuu is located in North Karelia and it has a population of 77,000.
We will spend the next four days here, visiting school sites and meeting with local officials.
In Joensuu, we visited The Martha Organization, which is a Finnish organization dedicated to teaching home economics.
In pairs, we cooked traditional Finnish meals such as Pureed Vegetable Soup, Mushroom Ragout, Carelian Pastries, Meathballs with Gravy, Pulled Oats, Mashed Potatoes, Marinated Cucumbers, and Blueberry Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream.
I had the opportunity to pair up with Charlotte Quigley. (Utah) We worked together to make the pureed vegetable soup. The ingredients include: onions, carrots, potatoes, rutabagas, leeks, celery, parsnips, califlowers, vegetable stock cube, ground white pepper, cooking cream, processed cheese, and cream cheese.
I'm helping Jill out with getting the dough ready.
In this picture, we're getting ready to eat the different Finnish foods we made in the kitchen. I tasted everything and it was delicious.
Seventh Day, November 8, 2022
For the first half of the day, I toured several places in Joensuu. In this picture, I visited the City Hall building and met with researchers from the University of Eastern Finland (UEF).
I had the opportunity to visit the Art Museum in Joensuu. The museum has three floors and several running exhibits. These included exhibits on Christian Icons, abstract art, Impressionism, Romanticism, and Chinese art.
I toured the city with my new friend and colleague, Ryan Lewis (Kentucky). In this picture, we're lounging in the Art Museum.
In the second half of the day, I visited Lyseon Lukio Upper Secondary School in Joensuu. I had the opportunity to meet several teachers from there and our host was Adam Lerch, an American Fulbrighter who lives and teaches in Finland. We had many one-on-one conversations with the teachers about myriad topics. Despite being far away from each other, we both have/are facing many of the same challenges in the teaching profession.
It was movie night, so teachers and students dressed in masquerade clothing. After watching a movie, the students ran an evening dance night at the school. It was a lot of fun. There was a lot of American music playing at this event.
Eighth Day, November 9, 2022
In this picture, I had the opportunity to meet Principal Mika Merilla and International Coordinator Hanna-Kaiso at Mutala Primary School in Joensuu.
I visited several classrooms and spoke with many students about their learning and educational experience.
I gave a classroom presentation with my friend and colleague, Conrad Ulpindo, about the state of California to 5th grade students.
We took a group picture with Mika's class at the end. Mika is a principal and a teacher at Mutala. This is a common practice in Finland.
We gave a second presentation to the whole school in the gymnasium.
We talked about California diversity, the major languages spoken, the major ethnic groups, the sports teams, the university system (CSU and UC), the natural park system, and much more.
In this slide, I discuss the major racial groups in California.
In this slide, I talked about the many natural wonders California provides. The Finnish are very proud of their natural parks, so they were appreciative of this.
California is home to many entertainment venues. I discussed many of them during this presentation.
I gave a presentation about John H. Pitman High School, the school I teach at. I spoke about the classes I teach, the programs offered at Pitman, and much more.
I made sure students asked me questions throughout the presentation.
The presentation was interactive and students were participating whenever I posed questions to them.
We visited the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) to listen to several presentations about the Finnish educational system and about the teaching program they offer there.
Later that evening, we had dinner at Teatteriravintola, which houses the city hall and the theater in Joensuu. We also met with several Fulbright Alumni as well.
Ninth Day, November 10, 2022
I met the owners of Leitsu during breakfast. They were great and I told them how nice their hotel was.
We visited the Karelian Museum in Joensuu. We learned about the local culture and its history in the region. I'm standing next to mannequins dressed in the Orthodox tradition.
The museum had many traditional instruments. The Kantele is the national instrument of Finland. Here's a link showing the instrument in action.
I had the pleasure to meet Olga Fillipova, who gave us a presentation about the education system in Ukraine. She is a professor at UEF.
She also told us about how the current war has ravaged the country.
During one of the sessions, we listened to Nazanin Berarpour, who is the Assistant Public Affairs Officer to the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki. She told us about her experience, opportunities available to U.S. citizens, and her work with the embassy.
Tenth Day, November 11, 2022
My partner, Ryan Lewis, and I participated in presentation rounds about our topic of Comparative Governments, with a focus on how different government systems handle immigration crises at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). See image for poster details.
We had several rounds and met many different adminstrators and teachers from schools across Finland. The purpose was to introduce ourselves and pitch ideas for transatlantic collaboration. We connected with several people who wanted pursue an academic relationship with us.
UEF held an Internationalization Day at their campus. I met many people as well as some students from an IB school I had visited a couple days prior.
At the conclusion of the day, we were given a presentation by professors, Timo Martikainen and his colleague, who spoke about UEF's teaching program. They spoke about the structure, the goals, the expectations, and the type of research they have their students conduct during the program. All teachers in Finland must have a Master's Degree before they can pursue a career as a full-time teacher in the country.
Eleventh Day, November 12, 2022
We traveled to the Helsinki Central Library Oodi.
This is a group picture at the entranceway. Later that day, we brainstormed ideas for our group presentations, which will take place on the last day. I'm partnered with Anne Boyette (North Carolina) and Ryan Lewis (Kentucky).
We participated in group reflections on topics about our experiences in a fishbowl format.
After the library trip, we traveled to the Heureka Science Center.
The science center had many exhibits.
The center had many rooms dedicated to different themes.
In the evening, we walked to the City Center where the shopping district is located. The City Center was getting ready for Christmas.
This part of Helsinki has a lot of shopping centers, restaurants, cafes, and bars.
Twelfth Day, November 13, 2022
Today was Father's Day in Finland, so we had a free day to travel on our own. Three of us visited the Helsinki Cathedral at Senate Square.
The church was having a service, so we attended it. There was a sermon, prayer, and communion.
We took a ferry to Suomenlinna, which is an island sea fortress located about 15 minutes away from Helsinki.
The sea fortress is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Here's a picture of me on the ferry with the Helsinki skyline behind me.
We traveled throughout the island, visiting the various museums they have there. Here's a picture of me by the seaside.
Since the site is a fortress, many large cannons can be found throughout its shoreline.
The site is also home to several underground tunnels that serve as defensive measures against attackers.
Ryan, Conrad, and I bid farewell to Suomenlinna. It was a great adventure and the weather was beautiful that day.
Thirteenth Day, November 14, 2022
We visited Mercuria Business College, which is a vocational school for 9-12 graders.
Tiina and Markus, the school's administrators, gave us an informative presentation about the vocational opportunities the school offers for its students.
The school has many working exhibits pertaining to everyday jobs, so students can practice what they learn in the classroom in a "real" setting. Here's an example of a shop.
I visited a classroom where the students were learning about shopping vocabulary.
I also visited a music class. I'm holding the Kantele, which is the national instrument of Finland.
The music teacher was showing me how to properly hold it. This brought back memories of visiting the North Karelian Museum a few days earlier.
Here's a video of Ilda Elina playing the Kantele. She goes through the evolution of the instrument from its inception to the present day. She also changes her clothes to reflect the changes.
I'm pointing at Finland in this pciture. The room behind me is the International Program Office at Martinaakso Upper Secondary School.
These students, from Upper Secondary, gave us presentations about their experiences at the school. We also had a Q&A with them that was enlightening.
Fourteenth Day, November 15, 2022
We used this station for transportation and visits. We would often pass this building when we walked through Central Helsinki. It's used for commuter rail and long-distance travel.
This is the National Museum of Finland. I traveled there with two of my colleagues.
The museum presents Finnish history from the Stone Age to modern times. It has many historical artifacts that showcase this history.
There was a room dedicated to religion in Finland. This is a church pulpit from 1549.
The museum contained a room of historical maps of Finland and its neighbors over the centuries.
This is Alexander's II throne. He is often called the "Liberator" in Russia because he abolsihed serfdom.
This Ferris Wheel contains popular tableware (Arabia brand) designed by Kaj Franck.
This is the Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden. The glasshouses have over 1300 plants from all over Finland.
The glasshouses also contain plants from Africa (e.g., savannah, desert, rainforests, and dry forests), from wetlands, Australia, and plants from the Mediterranean World. This garden houses numerous plants. The outdoor garden has many attractions as well.
Fifteenth Day, November 16, 2022
As part of our final presentation, I, Ryan, and Anne created an epic poem about our collective experiences about Finland. The poem was also published on the Fulbright Finland website.
We each took turns reading our parts. I was playing Kantele music in the background before each part began--in total, there are five parts. Our poem focused on our expectations coming in, what we learned, and we became most proud of.
Terhi Molsa, the CEO for the Fulbright Finland Foundation, presented me with a Fulbright certificate of completion.
I had the pleasure to meet all of these wonderful people from the Fulbright Finland Foundation. They were our generous hosts and guides throughout the field site experience.
Sixteenth Day, November 17, 2022
Saying a goodbye (temporary) to some of the people I met.
I flew straight from the Helsinki Airport. There's a 10 hour difference in time from California to Finland.
Finnair is the largest airline of Finland.
