As part of my Fulbright experience, I created a project-based learning unit plan that incorporated the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into an authentic summative project. My unit plan had students pick a category (e.g., civil rights, commerce/trade, criminal justice system, education, environment, gun rights/control, health, immigration, national security, social welfare, technology, or infrastructure) and a specific topic within these categories of their choice and research it. The culminating project had them writing a legislative bill (House or Senate) that they presented in a Mock Congress simulation in class. Students completed this project in groups of 2 to 3. Depending on the category and topic, the students connected it to the most relevant U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerning their research.
Lesson Plan Templates and Checklists
The Fulbright Exchange Program offered two formats for completing the Global Unit Plan: Project Based Learning (PBL) and Understanding by Design (UbD). Blank templates along with their corresponding rubrics are provided below for reference and for personal use.
