Art in all forms is an excellent coping strategy for kids to express big and little emotions. Sometimes kids do not have the exact words to say how they feel and what they are thinking but can communicate through a picture, poem, song, dance, or any other artistic expression.
Art expression is a great calming strategy for kids, as the mere creative process of focusing attention and body movements (i.e., calm breathing; slow, intentional, and methodical actions) are safe outlets for pent-up energy as kids let go of ruminating thoughts of what is bothering them, to how to communicate thoughts, emotions, and energy - while releasing them.
Art is empowering especially when a child feels like they can't do anything about a situation - many social justice advocates use art to express deep emotions to make little and big changes in themselves and the world around them.
Hey Kids,
ART is great for calming your brain and body and releasing your creative imagination. ART can also help you to express yourself to others when you want to use more than words to speak.

SOCIAL CHANGES & ART
In 2015, when Dr. V (our school counselor now) was a student at UC Merced, she had the honor of working with Professor/Artist Richard Gomez, UC Merced students, and Livingston Middle School's Student Art Club in creating a wall mural of diversity.
Check-out the video to watch what happened over the course of a few magical days during Winter Break in 2015 at Livingston Middle School.
