At Brown School, we are committed to supporting the whole child. We strive to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, physically, emotionally, and socially. We intentionally cultivate a safe, inclusive environment where adults model empathy and students experience belonging, dignity, and pride in who they are.
As a member of the School Support Team, school counseling interns are expected to engage in both direct and indirect student services, working collaboratively with students, staff, and families.
Indirect student services focus on supporting students through collaboration and systems-level work. These services may include:
Consultation and collaboration with teachers, families, and school staff
Referrals to school-based, district, or community resources
Preparation and planning for counseling programs and lessons
Data collection, analysis, and reflection to inform practice
Support of schoolwide initiatives, workshops, and prevention efforts
Direct student services involve working directly with students to support their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development. These services may include:
Instruction of school counseling curriculum
Individual and small-group counseling
Classroom lessons and advisement
Implementation of student standards aligned with the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success
Through both direct and indirect services, interns are supported in developing their professional identity while contributing meaningfully to the well-being of the school community.

Pursuing Master of Arts in School Counseling PPSC
I am a retired hair stylist and retail manager. After working in a salon for 2 years I decided to follow my ultimate career goal of working with students. I attended Merced College and received my Associate of Art in Early Childhood Education. Later, I transferred to California State University, Stanislaus. While I was there I was in between a career in social work and school counseling. Finding a career you are passionate about can be challenging and that is why I want to provide students with college and career guidance. I build my counseling around resilience, because tough times are inevitable. We have the choice and the ability to bounce back with the right skills.
On a personal note, I love cooking and baking. I never try the same recipe twice, always something new. I have a cat named Gustav, and I have always been a cat person. On the weekends I usually try new local coffee shops and bakeries. I can't live without my coffee! You will always see me with a coffee cup in hand.
I am so excited for this opportunity at Brown Elementary. The students are so fun and I can't wait to interact with them more throughout the school year. Thank you Julie for taking me in!

The following highlights the scope, collaboration, and impact of the Fall 2025 school counseling internship experience at Brown School.
School Counselor Interns Ms. Athena and Ms. Mallory,
Brown School extends its appreciation to Ms. Athena and Ms. Mallory for their dedicated service during the Fall 2025 school counseling internship. Both brought competence, clarity, and genuine care to their work with students, staff, and families.
Throughout the semester, Athena and Mallory made a meaningful impact by supporting areas of the school that are often the most difficult to reach. With recommended counselor caseloads limiting consistent early-grade support, their focused work with TK–3 students helped close an important gap. Their presence allowed for increased classroom lessons, small-group support, and relationship-building with our youngest learners during a critical developmental window.
Athena’s thoughtful SEL classroom lessons and developmentally responsive TK centers, along with Mallory’s work supporting career exploration in fifth grade and their shared leadership in fourth-grade bullying prevention lessons, reflected a strong understanding of both student needs and the realities of school counseling practice. Whether stepping in on the fly, supporting schoolwide initiatives, or collaborating closely with staff, both demonstrated professionalism, flexibility, and care.
Most importantly, I deeply valued the strong sense of team service we created together. Athena and Mallory contributed to a collaborative counseling approach that supported students, staff, and families in meaningful ways. Their work strengthened our systems of care and reflected the values at the heart of the school counseling profession.
We have no doubt that Athena and Mallory will continue to grow into highly skilled school counselors whose expertise will be appreciated wherever they serve. Brown is better because of the work they did here.
With appreciation,
Julie Von Berckefeldt, Ed.D.
School Counselor
Aspiring interns can expect a hands-on, collaborative experience focused on meaningful student impact, professional growth, and team-based school counseling practice.
These concerns are common among emerging school counselors. At Brown School, they are met with support, structure, and opportunities for meaningful practice.
It is natural to feel unprepared when entering a new professional role. At Brown, interns are not expected to “already know.” Instead, interns are supported in building a strong foundation through modeling, collaboration, and guided practice. Support is built into the experience.
Mistakes are a natural and valuable part of learning. At our site, supervision emphasizes reflection and collaboration rather than evaluation. Interns are encouraged to ask questions, try new approaches, and grow through experience in a supportive environment.
The ASCA National Model recommends a student-to-counselor ratio of 250:1, while the national average is significantly higher. During the internship, interns learn practical time-management and prioritization strategies to navigate real-world counseling demands. Interns engage in both direct services (individual, small-group, and classroom-based support) and indirect services (schoolwide initiatives, collaboration, and consultation), allowing for balanced and intentional practice.
Interns at Brown School are viewed as valued members of the School Support Team. Interns have opportunities to lead groups, attend teacher and counselor PLCs, contribute to SEL curriculum development, and participate in schoolwide initiatives. Interns are encouraged to practice self-advocacy and to advocate for students, staff, and families.
Interns are supported and supervised by Julie Von Berckefeldt, M.A. (Ms. V), a school counselor with experience in elementary counseling and counselor preparation. Ms. V holds a Master’s degree in Counseling, a Pupil Personnel Services Credential, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership at California State University, Stanislaus. Supervision at Brown balances guidance and autonomy, allowing interns to develop confidence, independence, and professional identity while knowing support is always available.
Education includes many frameworks and acronyms that can feel overwhelming at first. At Brown, questions are welcomed and encouraged. Interns are supported in learning the language of the field at a manageable pace, and it is always okay to pause and ask for clarification.
Above all, the Brown School counseling internship is designed to be a place where interns can learn, grow, and develop confidence through meaningful, supported practice.
This internship may be a strong fit for you if you:
Are self-motivated and ready to take initiative, even when stepping into new or unfamiliar spaces
Value collaboration and understand that school counseling work often requires building trust and relationships across differing perspectives
Are willing to advocate for students and for the role of school counseling within academic-focused systems
Can navigate moments of professional aloneness with reflection, integrity, and purpose
Learn best by engaging directly in real systems, adjusting in real time, and reflecting on practice
Are open to aligning with an established school counseling program in order to build readiness for launching into your own position
This internship is designed to prepare future school counselors to collaborate effectively, advocate thoughtfully, and enter the field with both confidence and clarity.
