Purpose of Community Service
With appropriate guidance and support, MYP students should, through their engagement with service as action:
become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth
undertake challenges that develop new skills
discuss, evaluate, and plan student-initiated activities
persevere in action
work collaboratively with others
develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism, and intercultural understanding
consider the ethical implications of their actions
All of these learning outcomes are closely associated with IB learner profile attributes and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills.
— MYP: From Principles to Practice —
Guidelines for Community Service
We are changing requirements to better align with IB MYP goals and expectations. It will be divided into 2 assignments that should be submitted to students' advisory Canvas course.
Assignment #1: MYP Service Book Reflection
Choose and read a book from the appropriate list or choose a text you read in your freshman English class.
Identify the MYP global contexts and the key concepts addressed in the book.
Identify at least 3 possible community service ideas you could do related to concepts or issues in the book.
Assignment #2: Post-Service Reflection
Choose a community service activity of your choice that relates to a key concept or global context in the book you read and complete at least 12 hours of service.
Submit all of the following:
Pictures and/or video of you engaged in the activity, including captions of what you are doing, for whom, and why.
Date(s) and times of service, with the signature of a supervising adult.
In well-developed paragraphs, select post-reflection questions to answer.
What Counts?
Volunteering for non-profit service organizations
Service Projects through Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, Campfire, and 4H.
Other suggestions: ushering, teaching a children’s class, walk-a-thons, reading to the blind or elderly at a nursing home, campus clean-up, serving and/or cleaning up at soup kitchens, sorting food at community food banks, make greeting cards for shut-ins or nursing home residents, organize and run an event for preschool children.
What Doesn't Count?
Money or material donations (Meaningful service within the IB MYP framework involves students giving of their time to serve others in their community, either locally, nationally, or globally.)
