Regional auditions are in early/mid January and take place on a Friday and Saturday.
On the day of regional auditions, you will go to the audition site, check in with the school’s hosts (get your scales and map), and find the warm-up room.
The regional audition is "blind," which means the judge is not able to see you/speak to you during your audition. You will only be able to speak to the student host in your audition room. The host will instruct you on when to play your audition materials.
The regional audition is in 3 parts (scales, etudes, and sight reading)
#1 Scales: You will be required to play 3 scales (chromatic and 2 scales given to you the day of the audition). Depending on your instrument, specific octave requirements may apply to scales. Check with your band director to get all regional scale expectations (they are currently posted in the bandroom).
#2 Etudes: In August, you will receive a set of regional etudes that are unique to that year’s audition. Regional auditions require you to play the first 3 etudes fully for the judge.
#3 Sight Reading: There are passages for you in the audition room (you are not to look at them until instructed by the host). You are given a set amount of time to study the music before playing it for the judge. Pay attention to the key signature and time signature. Try your best!
If you are selected to play in the all-region band, you will have the opportunity to audition for the all-state band later in the school year. All-State auditions have the same scale and sight-reading requirements, but you play etudes 3, 4, and 5 for the judge (instead of 1, 2, and 3).
