Stop here.

Things below are from previous years that will be updated and moved up when needed.

Module One

Week 3 will introduce us to Scaredy Squirrel and how not to be during an emergency. Students are learning how to be safe during storms, fires, disasters, and how to keep a safety kit at home for emergencies.

Has your family made a plan for home?

It's time for our turkey project for your family to complete together.

Decorate the turkey that was sent home with cereal, pasta, seeds, beads, buttons, cotton balls, feathers, …any items that you can glue to the shapes. If your turkey needs more support feel free to add a piece of cardboard backing. Be creative! Have fun!

The project needs to return to school by November 14th to be on display for our Open House.

Book Chats begin in January. Students are invited to participate in reading a higher leveled book with group support. They will read together and then discuss a book that is more challenging to encourage chapter book reading and higher point value selections. Book choices include:

The BFG,

The Sisters' Grimm,

The Tale of Desperaux,               Humphrey,

The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail,

How to Be Cool in 3rd Grade,

The Chocolate Touch

The One and Only Ivan

Mr. Popper's Penguins

Flat Stanley Letter Writing Adventure

Students will be writing letters to a family member or friend and then mailing their "Flat Stanley" off for an adventure much like the one in the book we read entitled Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown.

Being flat allows our character to be mailed off for a visit and return with news from another community and memories of the visit. This assignment helps us review friendly letter writing and how to address an envelope.

We look forward to their return in March and sharing the details of the trip.

Unit 4  - Extreme Nature

Our reading story, A Mr. Rubbish Mood, in our new series highlights the amount of trash that is thrown away and encourages the characters in the story to recycle more to take care of the planet.

Our next project partners with this theme and asks students to create something usable from an item that would have been trash. Creating a folder out of an empty cereal box, a new pencil holder from a soup can, a bird feeder out of a milk jug... the ideas are unlimited.

Students will present the information to the class meeting the requirement on the report card of “Speaking and Listening”. Projects are due January 25th.

 Learning Lessons – Community Support

Our third reading unit in our new series highlights how facing a challenge can help us grow and each week our story will have a lesson learned by the main characters involved.

With that in mind, our next project partners with this theme and offers an invitation to you, and others you may know, who would like to visit our room and teach a quick mini- lesson. It could be teaching us a new language, origami, write a poem, how to take care of our teeth, play a song on the piano,  make a healthy snack, play a new game, exercise… the ideas are only limited to your expertise.

I’ll schedule these visits and lessons for the months of November and December so let me know your interest and availability!

Thank you for helping us with “learning lessons”!

To go along with our Reading story about Roberto Clemente students have chosen their Biography book for their first report. When finished, students will make a commercial using Flipgrid to share the important details about their book for others to see.

All reports are due by Oct. 5th.

Express Yourself – Homework project

Our second reading unit in our new series highlights different ways people express themselves and defining what is most important to them.

With that in mind, our second project partners with this theme. Students are asked to create a collage of images that express who they are and what they care about. Students can collect images from any resource – magazines, computer images, photos, drawings, etc. and display them in some way for a visual presentation. We’ve brainstormed a few ideas in class such as a poster, diorama, mobile hanging from a hanger, etc. – the ideas are only limited by how each student wishes to express him/herself.

Students will present the information to the class meeting the requirement on the report card of “Speaking and Listening”. Projects are due at the end of October. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the uniqueness of your child and encourage his/her creativity as he/she expresses him/herself!

Module 1 - Safety Kit

Our first reading unit in our new series highlights good citizens and our big idea emphasizes how these people work to make a community strong!

Students will present the information as a report to the class meeting the requirement on the new report card of “Speaking and Listening”. Posters are due on Sept.  and presentations will be made in class. This is a great opportunity to help them learn time management, planning, and how to create a neat and easy to read poster – along with encouraging a strong community and appreciation for good citizens!

Projects & Reports - for the summer...  Have fun, sleep in, play, discover something new, read, do some Math, write in your journal - then come and see me in the Fall to report how it went! = )

Science and Social Studies combined this week as we studied inventions. We’ve completed computer research, made a timeline, and watched as Purdue participated in a Rube Goldberg style invention. It only takes one idea to make our world a better place and any job a little easier. Our homework challenge is to take an ordinary hanger and bring it back next week with a new job. We’ll then share our ideas as we finish our work on inventions.
