The Utes lived in the Great Basin Region of modern day Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada. They were once a peaceful tribe until they acquired horses from the Spanish and begin using them in everyday life. They became known for their riding skills and used horses to carry out raids on other tribes.
The Utes’ first documented conflict was between 1637-1641, when the Spanish captured about 80 Utes for forced labor. The Spanish continuously tried to take control of Ute land in the 1700s. Repeatedly they fought and had peace treaties only to fight again.
In the mid 1800s Americans started moving into the Ute territory to build the stuff they wanted like military bases and things to make money . This led to a war in 1854. It ended when the U.S. gave the Utes their reservation in 1868 in small parts of Utah and Colorado.
Three of the most famous chiefs and warriors are Ouray, Colorow, and Antonga (or Black Hawk). Antonga became famous in 1865 - 1867 when he lead the Utes in about 150 battles, attacks and raids between Mormon settlers in southern Utah and members of the Ute and Navajo tribes. Ouray is famous because of his leadership abilities. He was acknowledged by the U.S government to negotiate for a peace treaty for the Utes in 1880. Colorow was famous because in 1856, a band of Arapaho and Cheyenne stole about 40 Ute horses. With Nevava Colorow leading, they fought for the stolen horses. Although they were outnumbered eight-to-one, they were able to retrieve the stolen horses and killed four of the enemy. Colorow also led the Meeker Massacre in 1871, which later led to the northern Ute being forced on to a reservation.
4,800-10000 people are in the utes tribe. the utes lived in mostly colorado and part of wyoming. In Utah there are 3,500 members, in Colorado there are 1,500 members and in New Mexico there are 3,000 members.
The Utes occupied much of the state of Colorado by the 1600’s.
They were followed by the comanches from the south in the 1700’s.
Today Ute mountain is the largest employer in montezuma county. The utes live in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada right now.
There are three different Ute tribes today. Each Ute tribe lives on its own reservation, which is land that belongs to them and is under their control. Each Ute tribe has its own government, laws, police, and services, just like a small country. However, the Utes are also US citizens and must obey American law. In the past, each Ute band was ruled by a chief, who was usually were chosen by a tribal council. Today, Ute tribes are led by council members elected by all the people.
They do the same things all children do--play with each other, go to school and help around the house. Many Ute children like to go hunting and fishing with their fathers. In the past, Indian kids had more chores and less time to play in their daily lives, just like colonial children. But they did have dolls, toys, and games to play. Ute kids also enjoyed footraces, and girls and women played a ball game called shinny. A Ute mother traditionally carried a young child in a baby board on her back--a custom which many American parents have adopted now.
