Mohawk clothing was made from animal skins and woven fabrics. The men wore breechcloths with leggings and most did not originally wear shirts. They wore headdresses with feathers that represented each clan. When Mohawk men went to war, they shaved their heads and left a scalplock down the center of their head. This hairstyle is now called a Mohawk! Women wore skirts with short leggings and overdresses. Sometimes they wore beaded tiaras. They wore their hair in braids unless they were in mourning. Mohawk women cut their hair when someone they loved died. All Mohawk Indians wore moccasins until white settlers introduced leather soled shoes.
The Mohawk people made snowshoes to use in the winter and used pack dogs and sleds to travel on the snow. They used dugout canoes on the water. They harvested crops of corn, beans, and squash. They gathered wild berries and herbs. The men of the tribe hunted for deer and elk using bow and arrows, stone knives, and spears. They also fished. The Mohawk made many of the foods we enjoy today like cornbread, soups, and stews.
Men and women played important roles in the tribe. Mohawk men were in charge of hunting and war. Mohawk women farmed, took care of the property, and raised the families.
The tribe was governed by women, but military and trade decisions were handled by men. Men served as representatives in government but one the women voted!
Music was important to the tribe. They used drums and flutes to make music. Young men would play the flute outside of their girlfriend’s houses to let her know that he was thinking of her. They also had stories and legends that they passed down. One famous one was about the origin of their rabbit dance.
