At Two Rivers we believe that the quality planning and the success of your teaching hinge upon well-written verification criteria. The documents on this page are designed to support you as you develop criteria for each performance indicator you work with.
First, we should clarify some terms:
Verification Criteria - is a description of what a learner is doing at different levels of success. At TRSU we have a four-level scale (Emerging, Approaching, Proficient and Distinction) for content indicators. Please note that with the Essential Skills and Dispositions we are using a different scale. The descriptions of those scales can be found here.
Verification criteria for common performance indicators must be the same across the SU.
Some teachers may want to develop criteria specific to a project or a class. This is completely fine. These criteria may be essential for building understanding or communicating particular expectations. These criteria will not be included in report cards but might be necessary for parent conferences, or teacher meetings.
Rubrics - are any criteria or set of criteria used to assess work and guide feedback. A rubric may consist of a single criteria, for example, our common writing assessment only using the opinion/argument criteria, or it may include multiple criteria.
Many teachers across the supervisory union are using single point rubrics. We think single point rubrics are excellent for use with students. We encourage that a full four levels be developed in the background.
Verification Criteria Template
This template is designed to support grade-level teams or departments in developing verification criteria. The step in this process for identifying skills for a particular performance indicator, while seeming like an extra step will save time in the planning process. Therefore we recommend you take the time to complete the template for your verification criteria.
Using language from Marzano's Taxonomy is helpful for developing Verification Criteria.
