This course makes use of the most recent research findings related to the brain and learning and applies the neurodevelopmental approach to teaching. Participants will explore causes for student learning challenges including stress, poverty and other environmental concerns, as well as individual learning differences. We will use the neurodevelopmental framework which includes eight broad neurodevelopmental categories, or constructs (attention, higher order cognition, language, memory, neuromotor, social cognition, spatial ordering and temporal sequential ordering) to identify strategies to support all learners. We will also utilize a collaborative practice to look at student work samples to understand why specific students struggle. Participants will examine teaching practices in metacognition, creating a growth mindset, Universal Design and Understanding by Design and will create lesson plans for use in their own classrooms.
