Interview with Mr. Hilkert; The New GM Music Teacher
By: Catie Soulia
Mr. Hilkert (hill-kurt) is from Pennsylvania. He has been a music teacher at several institutions before Green Mountain. Mr. and Mrs. Hilkert wanted to move northeast because they preferred snow over freezing rain. He chose Green Mountain because our principal, Mr. Broadley, made an offer neither he nor his wife could refuse. Mr. Hilkert had interviewed for a job in Massachusetts but he never heard from them and GM’s offer was better. He thinks that our school is fun and supportive and looks forward to coming back every day.
Mr. Hilkert says that the best part of what he does is “seeing everybody progress and succeed” in their music. He did not know what to expect coming to Green Mountain and decided to walk in with an open mind. The support from the faculty exceeded his expectations on all levels.
He played soccer for several years but he chose to be a music teacher because he has always loved playing and performing for people, and he wanted to share what he knew with adolescents who shared these interests with him. He is hoping to start the marching band back up next year because he thinks, “every school should have one.” He believes in this very strongly.
Mr. Hilkert would like you to know that he is a big hockey fan. He also looks forward to performing in the area. His favorite quote is “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” originally said by Wayne Gretzky.
