The most important thing you can learn about coaching is that you must be prepared. Like teaching, you can’t just turn up and come up with ideas on the spot. The players will feel as though you don’t care because, under pressure, you will always revert to the same old drills.
Drills may appear as 'boring' compared to playing games but players will not go far in netball if they can’t balance to then throw and catch accurately, turn in the air, control their feet etc. The challenge for the coach is to make it fun and turn the skill drills into games.
The school provides resources such as this website with drills and sometimes the pictures help you work it out but watching some drills will also help.
It can be as simple as using cones, bibs and balls as props, and then introducing competitive elements. Eg tuck a bib in and get them to play in a confined space to rip the bibs off them and collect as many as possible so they are working on agility and moving to free space in a small area.
This page has some general drills around passing and balancing as well as links. Please note there is also a page for attacking drills and a page for defence skills. Most drills have been sourced from NetballNZ website.
