Component 1: Personal Investigation (60%)
This is a self-directed, practical portfolio supported by written critical analysis. It allows students to explore themes, techniques, and concepts that interest them. The component includes two main parts:
Practical Portfolio
Develop a project on a chosen theme, question, or concept.
Experiment with a range of materials, processes, and techniques.
Refine and produce final pieces showcasing creative skills.
Related Study (1000–3000 Words)
A written personal investigation linked to the practical work.
Analysis and evaluation of artists, art movements, or concepts.
Use of art terminology, contextual understanding, and research.
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (40%)
AQA provides a list of themes at the start of the assignment period. Students choose one and develop preparatory work, culminating in a final piece during a 15-hour supervised exam.
Stages:
Preparatory Period: Research, idea development, and material experimentation.
15-Hour Practical Exam: Produce the final piece(s) in a controlled environment.

AO3: Record observations and insights.
