Hello, World—Welcome to SciGirls Code!
Computer science (CS) education is experiencing a boon across the United States today, as formal and informal programs invite youth to become technology creators in addition to consumers. SciGirls Code joins the movement with a pilot program designed for middle school girls. True to SciGirls form, our curriculum centers on best practices for STEM and CS equity and strong, community-based partnerships. We know this model works.
Our first adopters are 16 established SciGirls programs across the country—thank you for innovating with us! Together, your cohort will implement a curriculum in three strands—mobile apps, robotics, and e-textiles—based on excellent existing CS and computational thinking resources. The support and cooperation from technology companies and curriculum developers, as referenced throughout the SciGirls Code curriculum, has been outstanding. In addition, SciGirls Code leverages long-time partnerships with the National Girls Collaborative Project to engage role models from its FabFems program and the Learning Technologies Media Lab at the University of Minnesota to grow the existing research base for encouraging girls in CS pursuits.
As early adopters, SciGirls expects feedback from you in order to improve these materials for future partners—both educators and girls. Colleagues from the Educational Development Center will study program implementation in order to improve SciGirls Code for expansion. We couldn’t do this important work without your collaboration. Let the learning begin!
