正負イオンや電子等の荷電粒子から構成されるプラズマは物質の第４状態と呼ばれ，電磁場との相互作用によって複雑な挙動を示します．電磁場を外力として印加可能な流体であることから，その閉じ込めや高効率加速といった積極的制御が可能となります．その物理現象の理解，そして複雑現象の制御を実現することで，多岐にわたる工学的応用が切り拓かれます．東北大学 工学研究科 プラズマダイナミクス・推進研究室では，プラズマ現象の理解と制御に関する研究と，その知見を基盤とした宇宙推進機 (プラズマエンジン)，核融合関連研究，産業応用を目指したプラズマプロセス装置に関する研究開発を，室内実験を主軸として総合的に行っています．こちらの動画(日本語版, 英語版)もご参照ください．

Plasma is called the fourth state of matter and consists of positive/negative ions and electrons, showing very complex dynamics as results of interaction with electromagnetic fields. Since the electromagnetic fields can be applied to the plasmas as body forces, active control of the fluid, e.g., confinement and acceleration, can be performed. Understanding of the physical processes and control of its dynamics will lead various engineering applications. PDPL (Plasma Dynamics and Propulsion Lab) in Tohoku Univ is studying the plasma dynamics and control, space propulsion devices (plasma engine), fusion-related plasma source, and plasma processing devices for industrial applications, via laboratory experiments.
