Effects and Mixing

During this module, we’ll learn more about adding the finishing touches to music through mixing. We will explore different effects on the EarSketch website, including the chorus effect, reverb, delay, and distortion. Add your own personal touch to your music by using the desired effects you would like for your music.

Part 1: Independent Work Prior to Class

• Mix Listening Activity- listen to three different recordings, figure out various elements of the music like what instruments are playing, and how their volumes relate to one another.

Part 2: Effects in EarSketch

• 20 minutes - Review of Mix Listening Activity

• 10 minutes - Have participants go through Chapter 4 in the EarSketch curriculum.

  • Have participants use the reference section of EarSketch and use the Volume effect on at least two of their tracks

• 10 minutes - go over chapter 5 sections 5.1 and 5.2

  • Have participants change one of their Volume effects in their script to an envelope

• 30 minutes - rotate through five stations (links to slides):

1. Chorus

2. Mix Listening and Fade

3. Reverb and Delay

4. Distortion and Panning

5. Explore effects of your choosing: Take time at this station to explore any effect of your choosing that you did not see at one of the other stations. These effects include: Bandpass, Compressor, EQ3Band, Filter, Flanger, Phaser, Pitchshift, Ringmod, Tremolo, Wah
