Variables, Functions, and Song Structure

In this module, we will learn continue to dive into loops, a foundational concept for both music and coding. We will also introduce three new concepts: variables, lists, and functions. We will apply these new tools through an exploration of song structure.

Part 1: Variables and Lists

• 20 minutes - Participant-led Icebreaker or mystery melody

• 15 minutes - introduction to Module 3 content: Variables and Lists (Mike Horn)

• 30 minutes - work through Module 3 Part 1 in pairs (or other content such as Module 1 Part 1 and Part 2)

• 50 minutes - Webinar on musical form

  1. 20 minutes - Song Writing/Structure

  2. 25 minutes - Group work exploring Ableton song structure & Mapping a Song.

Part 2: Functions and Song Structure

• 15 minutes - start off by splitting into four groups and sending into drum circle; each takes an instrument and fixes any syntax errors on the Surprise track (these need cleaning up or the template copied)
