Day 1: Hong Kong Adventure
After traveling from Macao to Hong Kong, Grade 5 students dove straight into an action-packed day of outdoor learning and exploration. Their itinerary included kayaking, hiking, and visiting an organic farm—each activity providing unique opportunities to develop important skills and demonstrate learner profile attributes.
Group 1: Hiking
The hiking portion tested students' physical endurance and mental determination. They were principled by following trail guidelines and respecting the natural environment around them. Students displayed caring attitudes by encouraging classmates who struggled with the terrain and checking in on each other's wellbeing. Their inquiring minds were evident as they asked questions about the local flora, fauna, and geography. Many showed themselves to be reflective as they pushed through challenging moments and recognized their own growth in perseverance.
Group 2: Visiting an Organic Farm
At the organic farm, students became knowledgeable learners, discovering sustainable farming practices and the connection between food production and environmental stewardship. They were open-minded as they explored unfamiliar agricultural methods and tasted fresh produce, some trying new foods for the first time. Students demonstrated caring for the environment by understanding the importance of organic farming and its impact on ecosystems. Their inquiring nature shone through as they asked thoughtful questions about composting, crop rotation, and the challenges farmers face.
Group 3: Kayaking
Students took to the water with enthusiasm, navigating their kayaks through Hong Kong's coastal waters. This activity required them to be risk-takers as many faced their fears of open water and tried a new physical challenge. They demonstrated balance by considering their own safety while coordinating with partners in tandem kayaks. Students showed resilience when facing physical fatigue and the challenge of mastering paddling techniques, and they were communicators as they worked together to steer and maintain rhythm with their kayaking partners.
Throughout the day, Grade 5 students embodied multiple learner profile traits, showing that experiential learning brings out the best in young people. Their willingness to step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and engage deeply with new experiences made Day 1 of Experience Week a tremendous success!
Day 2: The Adventure Continues...
On the second day of Experience Week in Hong Kong, Grade 5 students continued their outdoor learning journey. The groups were off to different, full day activities that provided hands-on experiences and rich opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate key ATL skills.
Group 1: Visiting an Organic Farm
At the organic farm, students engaged their research skills by formulating thoughtful questions about sustainable agriculture, collecting and recording information about farming practices, and making connections between food systems and environmental impact. They demonstrated thinking skills through critical thinking about the advantages and challenges of organic farming methods and by analyzing cause-and-effect relationships in ecosystems. Students showed communication skills by actively listening to the farmer's explanations and articulating their understanding of complex concepts. Their self-management skillswere apparent as they remained focused and organized while taking notes and participating in hands-on farming activities.
Group 2: Kayaking
The kayaking experience challenged students to apply self-management skills, particularly organization and affective skills, as they managed their equipment, followed safety procedures, and regulated their emotions when facing the physical demands of paddling. Students utilized communication skills by actively listening to instructions from guides and collaborating effectively with their kayaking partners through verbal and non-verbal cues. They demonstrated social skills by working cooperatively in pairs, respecting others' space on the water, and practicing conflict resolution when coordination challenges arose. Many students showed strong thinking skills through creative problem-solving when adjusting their paddling techniques to navigate currents and wind.
Group 3: Hiking
The hiking portion required students to draw upon self-management skills, especially perseverance and resilience, as they pushed through physical fatigue and challenging terrain. They practiced reflection skills by considering their own strengths and areas for growth during difficult moments on the trail. Students applied communication skills by giving and receiving meaningful feedback, encouraging peers, and clearly expressing when they needed support. Their social skills were evident as they demonstrated empathy toward struggling classmates and took responsibility for the group's collective success by maintaining appropriate pace and staying together.
Throughout Day 2, students consistently demonstrated transfer skills by applying knowledge from classroom learning to real-world contexts and making connections between different activities and their broader understanding of sustainability, teamwork, and personal growth.
Day 2 of Experience Week proved to be an excellent opportunity for Grade 5 students to practice and strengthen their ATL skills in authentic, meaningful contexts beyond the traditional classroom setting.
Day 3: Another Busy and Exciting Day...
On the last full day of activities, Grade 5 students participated in their third and final activity.
In kayaking, students worked in pairs to navigate the coastal waters, learning paddling techniques and water safety while developing coordination, teamwork, and confidence as they faced their fears of open water and adapted to changing conditions.
The hiking experience pushed students to traverse varied terrain including steep inclines and rocky paths, requiring perseverance, determination, and mutual support as they observed local wildlife and vegetation while learning the importance of pacing, hydration, and encouraging one another through difficult sections.
At the organic farm, students gained hands-on experience with sustainable agriculture by learning about composting, natural pest control, and crop rotation, participating in planting or harvesting activities, and discovering the connections between food production, environmental health, and personal choices while tasting fresh, locally-grown organic produce directly from the farm.
Final Night Excitement
Party Pit Dance Party
The "Party Pit" transformed into a vibrant dance floor, complete with colorful lights and upbeat music. Students erupted into the space with unbridled enthusiasm, dancing, singing, and celebrating together. Popular songs had everyone moving—from coordinated group dances to freestyle moves that showcased individual creativity.
Day 4: Celebration and Reflection
The last day full day of Experience Week arrived with a bittersweet mix of exhaustion and excitement. After four days of adventure, learning, and personal growth, Grade 5 students were ready to celebrate their accomplishments while savoring the last moments of their Hong Kong journey.
On the final morning at Breakthrough Village, students gathered on the lawn for a variety of structured activities before heading home to Macao. They competed in relay races, artistic reflections and team games.
Experience Week 2025 had been a resounding success, leaving Grade 5 students with memories, skills, and confidence that would last far beyond their return to Macao.
