At Palgrave , we believe that Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
The national curriculum for art & design aims for all pupils to: -
produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
learn about well-known artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Intent
At Palgrave Primary School we believe that Art is a vital part of children’s education and has a significant and valuable role in the taught curriculum, as well as the enrichment opportunities that we offer our pupils. Using the PlanBee art curriculum will develop children’s critical abilities and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of male and female artists. Art is by nature a creative and expressive subject. Using the stimuli of artists and cultures, we seek to develop children’s imaginative nature and teach them how to explain the artwork that they create. It is also important for the children to be able to analyse, develop, praise and critique their own and other artist’s creations. Children will develop their understanding of the visual language of Art with effective teaching and considered sequences of lessons and experiences. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) will be developed by providing a broad and balanced curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential.
Implementation
The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each Art unit are mapped across each year group and throughout the school to ensure progression. At the beginning of each unit, children are able to convey what they know already from previous year’s teaching, for example, which previous artist or style links with the artist that they are currently studying, as well as what they would like to discover and further understand. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s varied starting points. Lessons will then focus on an artist, ‘unpicking’ the formal elements of the art work evolving key vocabulary, skills and techniques applied. The emphasis on knowledge ensures that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by. Pupils will develop these core Art skills, putting into practice skills learned so far, to support the build-up of their final masterpiece they were inspired to create. Finally, pupils analyse and reflect on their artwork throughout the creation of their final piece.
Impact
The Art curriculum contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgment, and self-reflection. Outcomes in Art and other curriculum subject books, evidence a broad and balanced Art curriculum. Analysis of an artist's work is evident as children create their own art pieces by ‘unpicking’ artists' work prior to completing a final piece. Children review their successes in achieving the lesson objectives at the end of every session and are actively encouraged to identify their own target areas, with these being identified, shared and verified by teachers as appropriate. Throughout their time at Palgrave Primary School, our pupils will have been exposed to a wide range of artists and styles that will help to form and develop their own personal interests and approaches. The visual elements of art language will be embedded and developed throughout their primary school years and will ensure that they are high school ready when they reach the end of their journey..
