My name is Dr. Peg Diekhoff and I am excited to start this professional development opportunity with you. Poor Students, Rich Teaching is provided by the South Dakota Family Engagement Center (SFEC). I have spent the last 33 years involved in the education; the first 29 as teacher, coach, and administrator and the last four as the Project Manager for South Dakota GEAR UP at Black Hills State University. Poor Students, Rich Teaching is a self-paced course designed to provide participants with meaningful work that can assist in richer teaching. Suggested timelines are provided only as a guide. The course opens February 1 and closes on March 27th. To meet the requirements of one CEU/Graduate Credit, the readings, activities and assignments are designed to equal a total of 15 hours.
Research supports that the classroom teacher is the single most significant contributor to student achievement. This course provides an opportunity for teachers to study and apply the seven high-impact mindsets necessary to reach students from poverty. Becoming equipped with these mindsets holds the potential for teachers to make a profound difference in the lives of all students, not just those from poverty.
Each unit of the course is linked in the headers below with individual pages. Activities and assignments are linked beneath each unit. You can also access units by clicking in their headers listed in the upper right of this Home page.
