Unit 2: Building Strategic Understanding and Capacity
A critical component of the Future Ready Librarians Framework is Leading Beyond the Library, recognizing that as a school and instructional leader, librarians need to see their library program as part of a larger school and system ecosystem with a central focus on students and their learning. It is no longer enough to only have a great library program. Future Ready Librarians must align their practice and programs with school and district strategic priorities and to lead, teach, and support those goals and outcomes. Librarians cannot afford to see themselves as independent -- instead they must recognize their interdependence with schools and systems and embrace collaboration and partnership with school leaders and fellow educators.
Now that you have had a chance to examine yourself as a professional, we're going to turn focus outward to research and understand district and school goals. In the same way that our self-reflection provided useful data and insight into ourselves, this research process will help you better understand what keeps district and school leaders up at night (or what they dream about). You will use this information to prepare for your own leadership conversations. In addition to official sources of information, you will examine social and other media to provide additional insight into the priorities of school and district leaders.
Recognizing that the pandemic has profoundly impacted schools and learning, we will also recognize and examine critical questions to help empathize with and understand the ways in which educators, schools, and districts have shifted their focus, attention, and energy.
