Textiles - Cross Stitch
Year 3 children will create a colourful bag using a running stitch. They will also add buttons using the button hole stitch technique.
Skills that will be taught:
Sewing a running stitch with regular-sized stitches and understand that both ends must be knotted.
Preparing and cutting fabric to make a pouch from a template.
Using a running stitch to join the two pieces of fabric together.
Decorating their pouch using the materials provided.
Structures- Constructing a castle
Year 3 children will plan, design and make their own 3D castle.
Skills that will be taught:
Drawing and labeling a simple castle that includes the most common features.
Recognising that a castle is made up of multiple 3D shapes.
Designing a castle with key features which satisfy a given purpose.
Scoring or cutting along lines on the net of a 2D shape.
Using glue to securely assemble geometric shapes.
Utilising skills to build a complex structure from simple geometric shapes.
Evaluating their work by answering simple questions.
Mechanical systems- Pneumatic toys
Year 3 children will plan, make and evaluate a toy which contains a pneumatic system.
Skills that will be taught:
Drawing accurate diagrams with correct labels, arrows and explanations.
Correctly identifying definitions for key terms.
Identifying five appropriate design criteria.
Communicating two ideas using thumbnail sketches.
Communicating and developing one idea using an exploded diagram.
Selecting appropriate equipment and materials to build a working pneumatic system.
Assembling their pneumatic system within the housing to create the desired motion.
Creating a finished pneumatic toy that fulfills the design brief.
