Mechanisms - Wheels and Axles
Year 1 children will plan, design, make and evaluate fire trucks to support their learning of the Great Fire of London.
Skills that will be taught:
Explaining that wheels move because they are attached to an axle.
Recognising that wheels and axles are used in everyday life, not just in cars.
Identifying and explaining vehicle design flaws using the correct vocabulary.
Designing a vehicle that includes functioning wheels, axles and axle holders.
Making a moving vehicle with working wheels and axles.
Explaining what must be changed if there are any operational issues.
Spring
Cooking and nutrition- Smoothies
Year 1 children will learn about a range of fruit and vegetables and prepare them to make their own healthy smoothies.
Skills that will be taught:
Describing fruits and vegetables and explaining how to identify fruits.
Naming a range of places that fruits and vegetables grow.
Describing basic characteristics of fruit and vegetables.
Preparing fruits and vegetables to make a smoothie.
Summer
Textiles- Puppets
Year 1 children will design, make and evaluate their own puppet based on their favourite storybook character.
Skills that will be taught:
Joining fabrics together using pins, staples or glue.
Designing a puppet and use a template.
Joining their two puppets’ faces together as one.
Decorating a puppet to match their design.
