WESTERN HOUSE ACADEMY
As a Value Based School, our ten core values and sub-values are at the centre of every experience delivered and every lesson taught.
The vision for Design and Technology is to encourage our pupils to harness and implement our values to become well-rounded, knowledgeable and confident learners that is a credit to themselves and others and will embrace every new opportunity.
Knowledge
Knowledge taught is based upon the National Curriculum goals. Skills are progressive and therefore, it creates a wealth of knowledge to draw from to enhance learning.
Even though Design and Technology is a practical, skill based subject, we still impart the knowledge of how to apply a skill, when to apply a skill and very importantly, what will be achieved by applying the skill.
The question, "How to ... so that ...?" is always at the forefront of our minds.
In Design Technology we are guided by the following six principles that develop knowledge and skills (in line with the NC):
User - pupils should consider who their product is for
Purpose - pupils should decide which tasks their product will perform
Functionality - pupils should think about how their products will work
Design Decisions - pupils should have opportunities to make informed choices
Innovation - pupils should have scope to be original with their thinking
Authenticity - pupils should design and make products that are real, believable and can be evaluated through use.
Equality
Our D&T curriculum promotes equality and inclusion. During the lessons, children will learn about past inventors and designers from a range of different backgrounds. Some of the units taught allow children to consider cultural influences on design allowing children to express themselves creatively.
Experience
Our D&T lessons have a different skill based focus and outcome for each year year group every term and therefore the pupils are lucky to enjoy a wealth of different experiences. D&T strives to add to this treasure trove by providing whole school projects.
