Lesson nine
Linking Grid References to photos
What is a Grid Reference again?
Watch the very simple video below to remind yourself of how to locate something on a grid.
In Grade 4 you learned that a grid on a map is a pattern of straight lines that cross over each other to form blocks. Grid references are the numbers and letters along the sides of the grid. They help us to find places on a map. Take a look at the physical map of Africa below with the grid references on it. This has been taken directly from your textbook.
You should be able to recognise the countries at the grid references below: A4, F4 and E6 without looking at the political map.
Now let's see if we can find the references for some of the top ten places in Africa that we learned about. See if you can find them on the grid references.
Serengeti - Tanzania
Okovango Delta - Botswana
Johannesburg - South Africa
Nairobi - Kenya
Lagos - Nigeria
Kruger Park - South Africa
Harare - Zimbabwe
Giza - Egypt
Zanzibar - Tanzania
