Busing is available by WSSD Transportation from WES, NPE & SHMS
SRS Families: PACC is in the walk-zone. We provide an escorted walking bus everyday from SRS to PACC.
If you child is old enough, consider letting them be an independent walker. Our staff will be on the look out.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Art / Craft / Visual Art

Animation Station (Grades 3-5)
From wild stories to obstacle courses and action scenes. Explore the basics of animation through a simple exercise before expanding into your own world or grueling obstacle course. Craft epic action sequences and battles while understanding the use of rigs and clever camura angles. All with the help of LEGO, no drawing needed. Don't forget the blooper reel! Students must BYOT (bring-your-own-tablet)

Crafts & Cultures: World Cup (Grades 1-5)
Get your passports ready and wear your favorite team kit, World Cup-style! Football, as it's known the world over, is the most popular sport enjoyed by people from many different cultures and backgrounds. Using the World Cup bracket as inspiration, we'll learn more about the sport, its fans and the many cultures that are connected by the love of this game. Fall soccer is over, but the fandom doesn't have to stop when it gets cold!  Students will work in many mediums, such as clay, weaving, painting, and jewelry. Come on this journey to learn more about the three host countries (Canada, USA & Mexico) and cultures of some of the top contenders through art making and cultural exploration! 

Comic Book Club PLUS (Grades 3 - 5)
This session its all about comics! Comic Book Club Plus has the fun of making comic books but adds a deeper exploration into different cultures. Each culture will bring something new, from shadows and lighting to grand backgrounds. At the end of the course, comics will be collected, edited and printed for kids to take home. Taking from Keville's popular Comics Around the World syllabus, students will be exposed to new styles to influence their imaginations. 

Sewing Circle (Grades 3-5)
Join our sewing circle. Intro to hand-sewing. Students will learn the basics of sewing (how to sew buttons, sewing patches, holes and hems, Embroidery and basic pattern making. Students will build their own sewing kits to take home at the end. No sew projects, basic stitches, use of sewing tools and a few larger projects will keep idle hands busy.

Project DIY (Grades 1 - 5)
In Project D.I.Y., we make art accessible not just in the classroom but at home and in everyday life! In this multimedia class, students will discover new ways to create art using nature, recycled materials, or common household items. The crafts and games introduced in Project D.I.Y. also aim to add some excitement and creativity to everyday tasks and challenges such as staying organized, decorating your room, making a delicious snack, or simply finding something to do on a rainy day!

The Wandering Artist (Grades 1-5)
Not all artists who wander are lost....Hop into our time machine to travel to different artistic time periods to work with multi-mediums to create your own masterpieces. Travelers will be introduced to a new artistic movement via video clips and a hands-on project (painting, watercolor, clay, 2D and 3D materials, drawing, and collage). We may even get in a few group games!

Exploring Digital Art (Grades 5-12)
explores different techniques and tools available in drawing Apps. From painting to illustration, each class looks at several approaches to design with easy tips. Simple projects will be incorporated to be able to bring these tools to life! Topics include: Sketching and Inking: Character design on multiple layers; Coloring with Flats: Learn tools like lasso, flatting and hues ; Landscapes with Shapes: A Stylized approach to painting environments; Fun with Brushes: Exploring digital painting with various brushes

I AM Superhero (Grades 3-5)
Part drawing class, part storytelling, part saving the world! With visual artist Elizabeth Affleck, students will dive into the world of the Superhero, exploring different genres and artists. Through visual representation, illustration and comic techniques, students will create their own superhero that will relate to an important issue in the world. 

This is a multimedia based class that will include visual arts mediums, storytelling, broad strokes of comic book illustration and even role-playing and costume creation. The class will discuss age-appropriate current events and how to solve some of the world's hard to solve problems. Sometimes it just takes the one...the Superhero in YOU.

Lego Masters (Grades 2-5) 

LEGOs have been a staple of messy bedrooms and darkened hallways for ages now, but did you know they’re also (gasp!) educational? LEGO Masters class will open your young builder’s mind to all the many uses of these colorful bricks, as students work through art projects and engineering challenges that will have them using LEGOs in ways they may have never thought of before. Can you build the fastest car? A bridge that supports weight? An elevator for an egg? Come find out!

Master Crafters (Grades 3-5)
This is a visual arts class that practices what others preach! Taking a page from the old masters, students will get the chance to paint like Michelangelo (how much did his back hurt painting that ceiling), splatter drip like Jackson Pollock (wear old clothes that week) and learn the finer points of just how mixed up Picasso really was! We often focus on under-represented artists, artistic crafts and mediums, and using natural or recycled materials. We also like to highlight up-and- coming artists currently working in the field.

Comics Adventure: Styles Around the World (Grades 3-8)
Illustrator Keville Bowen returns for to lead an expedition around the world! Different cultures have brought out different cartooning styles. As budding illustrators, gaining inspiration from world masters only strengthens our own creativity! Keville will introduce each genre using print, video and digital examples, give tips and tricks to imitate each style and then leave ample time to experiment!

Checkmate! Board Game Design (Grades 6-8)

Have you ever been in the middle of a board game and thought, “Why am I having so much fun?” Welcome to Checkmate! Board Game Design. Each week, students will crack open a different board game, play a round or two, then discuss the game itself: what works, what doesn’t, and why it seems like I can’t ever win a game of Catan. Students will gain understanding and insight into strategy, tactics, and what goes into creating the modern board game experience. So roll the dice and come on by!

Explorar! Latin America (Grades 3 - 5) 

With Professor Desiree Diaz, Swarthmore College

Can you paint like Frida Kahlo? Do you want to sing like Shakira? Can you kick a soccer ball like Leo Messi?  Let’s travel to Latin America! In a fun and interactive class, students will use a variety of activities (music, stories, games, drawing, and art projects) to explore and learn about the history and culture of different Latin American countries, relevant figures, and their contributions to the United States. 

This class is in partnership with Swarthmore College, led by professor Desiree Diaz and students in the class Latino Images. 

Dance/ Movement

Let's Get Moving! (K - 3)
This class will get students moving as they explore dance and improvisation through teamwork and creative expression. In the studio, our bodies, the space, and our relationships become the canvas! Dancers will learn how to choreograph, partner, and tell their own movement stories. So let's get moving!


Little Dancers ( Pre K - Grade 1)
In this class, young dancers will be introduced to the foundations of creative expression. This class is designed to be a fun, safe, and exciting space for dancers to develop new skills in body awareness and teamwork. Dancers will learn how to make creative choices and find the joy in dancing together every week! This is a perfect first independent dance class for any child who loves to move! 

Story Dance (K - 3)
This class invites kids who are storytellers--kids who love to dance, write, and draw their own worlds. This project will culminate in a showing of these stories through movement and art. This class will get students moving as they explore dance and improvisation through teamwork and creative expression. In the studio, our bodies, the space, and our relationships become the canvas! Dancers will learn how to choreograph, partner, and tell their own movement stories.

Zumbini is an early childhood education program that uses original music and movement to promote cognitive, social, fine/gross motor skill and emotional development for children ages 0-4, all while creating the ultimate bonding experience for families.  Learn more here

After School Dance Party (Grades K-2)
This class will get kids moving to age-appropriate music from hit movies, videos and games. Learn popular dance steps, improv and tips to choreograph your own sequences! Class will start with a upbeat warm up and end with a relaxed cool down. We’ll introduce a new set of dances each week. No prior dance experience or special shoes needed! Wear comfortable clothes to move in and sneakers. No sandals or slick-bottomed shoes. Class is geared to be gender-nonspecific, so any kids who like to move and groove should hop in!

Ballet Basics (Ages 5-8)
Learn basic ballet technique in a fun and creative environment. Students will explore adagio (slow/flowing) and allegro (fast/sharp) movement and music, introductory ballet positions, and learn the language of ballet through storytelling. Dancers will hone their focus and muscle memory as well as show self-expression through improvisation and choreography. Attire: Black/pink leotard, pink/white tights, and pink ballet slippers are recommended. Boys should wear a white tee shirt, shorts. 

Cheer Basics (Grades 4-8)
Do you have cheer tryouts coming up or new to cheerleading? Whether you want to join a squad or just learn some new skills our cheer basics class is for you. Students will learn the basic terms and tricks of cheerleading. Each week we will work on flexibility, review cheer moves, and practice choreography skills! Bring a water bottle and wear sneakers with comfortable, stretchy clothes.

Kinder-Bunch: Jump & Jive: (Ages 4-6)
Using the Zumba® Kids, Jr program, this class is rockin', high-energy dance parties packed with kid-friendly routines. Each class will break down steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure. Kids will movin’ and groovin’ while promoting teamwork, confidence, self-esteem, respect, memory, creativity, coordination, balance, and cultural awareness. No prior dance experience or special shoes needed! Wear comfortable clothes to move in and sneakers. No sandals or slick-bottomed shoes. Class is geared to be gender-nonspecific, so any kids who like to move and groove should hop in!

Saturday Morning: Jump & Jive (Ages 4-6)
In this class, we will explore creative movement and an intro to jazz dance and create a short movement phrase to showcase with use of different storylines from popular books and music from popular movies. Movement props keep the imagination going. Get your Saturday morning JUMP-started! 

Saturday Morning Dance Party (Ages 7-9)
This class will get kids moving to age-appropriate music from hit movies, videos and games. Learn popular dance steps, improv and tips to choreograph your own sequences! Class will start with an upbeat warm up and end with a relaxed cool down. We’ll introduce a new set of dances or dance styles each week (including but no limited to: jazz/hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, lyrical and rhythm of soft-shoe tap (no tap shoes required). S.T.E.A.M. / Nature 

Wildcraft in Winter (Grades 1-5)
Brrrrrr…it’s cold outside and many of the plants we use for first aid have died back for the winter. In Winter Wildcraft! we’ll be focusing more on crafting with plants that can be found all year round in our kitchens, or that we’ve preserved from the warmer months. We’ll be making things like bath bombs, herbal sodas, fire cider, and experimenting with ways to dye fabric with plants. Come inside, enjoy a warm cup of tea, and learn about all the amazing things we can make with plants!

Camp WildCraft (Grades 1-5) - Spring session
This is a seasonal class and uses plants that are available at each growing stage.Projects differ based on what's in season. Grandma needs huckleberries to bake a pie. You and your cousins embark on an adventure up the mountain to collect berries as well as herbs she uses. Will you harvest the right plants to help with the trouble you run into along the way? Will you make it back before nightfall? The only way to win is by helping each other out. In this class we will learn about herbal first aid and how to use it on our adventure up the mountain in the board game Wildcraft! Each week we will learn about a different way to prepare herbs that are easily found around our homes and with ingredients most of us will have in our kitchens. Genesis of Game Design (Grades 3 - 5)
Get ready to dive deep into the study of Ludology (the study of games) and get your game on!
Each week will focus on different game design principles as we analyze various types of games through both play and discussion. Having fun is a constant across all cultures in many shapes and forms: card games, board games, strategy games, role-playing games, live action and of course video games! Whether it's Chess, Pokemon, or Dominoes we'll be focusing on "Finding the Fun" and learning what it takes to be a great game designer.

A Hogwarts Afternoon (Grades 1 - 5)
Our most popular camp theme is now a weekly hang out! Bring a friend and meet up to chat about HP, Hermione, Ron and he-who-must-not-be-named! J.K. Rowling’s best-selling Harry Potter series come alive as students are sorted into houses, experience hands-on classes such as Herbology, Potion Making and Divination. The wand chooses the Wizard and you will need a good wand to DUEL. Which house will win the House Cup? Who will defend Hogwarts to the end?! If your child has ever wanted to visit Hogwarts, now’s their chance! Keep an eye out for visiting professors, Owl Mail and the dreaded Howler! Some of our camp favorites AND many new projects will be part of this series.

S.T.E.A.M. Lab (Grades 3 - 5)
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math--we do it all in S.T.E.A.M. Lab. This class takes the approach of learning through failing and trying on our own before asking for help. We want to develop & encourage the Growth Mindset to get kids ready for challenges throughout life. Projects include video game design, 3D printing, chemistry experiments, design challenges, origami, aerodynamics, simple block coding, engineering challenges, and the basics of electronics & robotics. This class is geared for kids in Grade 3 or higher, as dexterity skills and reading on our own are big drivers in our lab.

Theater, Acting & Improv

Yes And... Acting & Improv! (Grades K - 3)
Imaginations wanted! Through various acting exercices, scene studies and fun improv games, students learn the tools to think on their feet, listen and respond with wit, and be creative in the moment. Kids practice being spontaneous, collaborative and often hilarious!  

We'll build our confidence, learn to trust our instincts, develop independent thinking, decision-making and effective communication... all while make new friends along the way. We look to bring out the character in YOU!

PARK AVENUE PLAYERS (Grades 1-5) 
All the world’s a stage! Using original characters and unique settings, students will brainstorm together, write, and perform an original theatre piece. Through group storytelling, theatre and improv games, students will learn the basic techniques of playwriting and acting, how to design props and scenery and learn to work as an ensemble to present an in-class performance at the end of the session. 

Myths & Make-Believe (Grads K-3)
Who doesn't want to live in a world filled with magical myths and legendary creatures! Drawing on children's wild imaginations and notable mythology from around the world, students will explore the worlds of fantastical beasts such as Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot and leprechauns... are these beings just storied characters or is there truth to their existence, once upon a time! This is a multidisciplinary class that will have elements of movement and yoga, mindfulness, STEAM, visual arts, theatrical and group games and improv. We aim to end the session with Creature Feature Celebration! 

MUSICAL THEATRE  REVUE (Grades 1 - 5) - Fall session
Triple Threat! Let’s Dance, Sing and Act… Cabaret Style! Our budding performers will work together to learn popular musical theater songs and dance interludes along with several scenes to create a full cast production number. A theme will tie all these sections together and crafting a few key costume pieces and props will complete the show. No prior dancing, singing or acting needed.

SKITS & GIGGLES IMPROV (Grades 6-8)
Improvisation, or improv for short, is the art of making live theatre out of thin air, creating characters, dialogue, and plot on the spot, and is a critical tool in the actor’s toolbox. Improv allows anyone to be more flexible, creative, and in-the-moment, and practices skills like effective communication, listening, and reaction. Skits & Giggles students will learn the fundamentals of improv through games, exercises, and an introduction to theory, building new skills with every class. Come for the games & laughs, stay for the storytelling!

LUNCHBOX THEATRE (Ages 4-6)
Passport to Imagination! What magic can a battered old suitcase hold? Add a dash of imagination  and find out! Your child will join peers on a fun and creative journey to destinations real and imaginary, exploring story and characters thru creative drama, movement, and prop/art making. 


Whose Line Is It Anyway? What happens when popular fairy tale characters meet up in an unexpected setting? Will Aladdin, Prince Eric and The Beast start their own boy band. Might Snow White, Belle and Alice form their own Fortune 500 corporation? Will Maleficent, Scar and the Evil Queen conspire together for world domination only to be thwarted by the team of Three Little Pigs and the 7 Dwarfs? Our Park Avenue Players are going to take on personas of familiar characters and put them in new situations and environments. What silly, magical, tragic or triumphant outcomes may transpire if unexpected friends align!  Through theatre and improv games, students will learn the basic techniques of acting and build trust as a group to present an in-class performance at the end of the session.  


Yes AND... Theatre Improv (Grades 6-8)

Improvisation, or improv, is a form of live theatre in which the plot, characters and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up in the moment. The Art of Improv give actors the ability to be in the moment, listen intently, communicate effectively, react, re-direct and wriggle out of a sticky situation. Some may say that's just a typical day for any middle school student. Come have a lot of fun, fine-tuning your ability to handle anything that gets thrown at you. 

Yoga & Mindfulness

Myths & Make-Believe (Grads K-3)

The Creative Yogi: Art, Yoga & Nature (Grades K-5) 
Our yogi's are going to expand their expression this Spring by incorporating art, craft and nature-inspired creativity connecting their yoga and mindfulness practice to the world around them. Each week a theme emerges, flowing through Sun Salutation greeting and yoga poses, to the inspired art/nature project. Students will use a multitude of mediums: painting, drawing/illustration, mandalas, yarn, collage, clay, watercolor and more. Several projects are inspired by our summer "Sustainaility Camp" activities. We endeavour to create a mini-gallery for display at session's end. As as the weather warms up, our yoga practice may move outside. 

Kids Yoga & Mindfulness (Grades K-3)
Young yogi’s stretch their bodies, minds and imaginations learning fun asanas (poses) that energize and calm progressing toward more challenging postures over time that increase focus and flexibility while releasing tension. Music, stories, group games, and partner poses etc. are also integrated for developing social skills, creativity, and confidence. Quiet meditation, relaxation, and heart centered mindfulness principles guide our journey.  Students may also craft projects such as: calming jars, yoga journals, affirmation stones, breathing bracelets or the like. We have yoga mats for students, but you are free to bring your own. 

YogAmi - Kids Yoga (Ages 4-6)
YogAmi~Kids Yoga combines a creative, multi-arts approach to learning yoga in playful, age appropriate ways with songs, stories, games, partner and group poses, and even simple crafts, providing an enriching experience for the development of the whole child. Educational elements and yoga principles such as kindness, cooperation, respect and self awareness are threaded through themes each week.

Come PLAY at ‘YogAmi’, a creative yoga class of exercise to refresh and energize the body and simple breathing and meditation to calm the mind and open the heart, while incorporating interactive songs, movement, stories and games. Classes are conducted in bare feet indoor and if comfortable outdoors. Non binding, comfortable clothes are required for adults and children. Please bring your own yoga mats if you have them, otherwise some mats will be available for your use. Kids under 3 yrs old may attend but must participate with an adult.

LOCATION

Park Avenue Community Center

Newly re-named, the Park Avenue Community Center is home to a variety of programs, classes, meet-ups, and events. As of January 2022, The Creative Living Room will join The PAC as our home for our year-round programs. 

The PAC is partnering with Swarthmore United Methodist Church to bring the building back to life. Next door to the Swarthmore Library in the heart of Swarthmore Town Center, their motto is "We've Got Space For That!"
