College admission requirements will vary from school to school and it is recommended that students check college admission requirements before applying to their college of choice. Please see the minimum UC/CSU Requirements outlined by the CA Department of Education here. Students are encouraged to reach out to their School Counselor if they have questions about the college admission process.

As you plan for life after high school, you’ll hear a lot about “a-g” courses or “a-g” subject requirements. These are classes you have to take if you want to get into a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC). Taking “a-g” classes can also be helpful if you’re thinking about going to another kind of college or if you don’t need a four-year degree for the career you want.
The classes are in specific subject areas labeled “a” through “g.” Area “a” classes are in History. Area “b” classes are in English, and so on. Here’s a quick overview of “a-g” and the number of years you’ll need to take classes in each area.
Area “a”: History/Social Science.
2 years required.
Area “b”: English.
4 years required.
Area “c”: Mathematics.
3 years required, 4 years recommended.
Area “d”: Science.

Area “e”: Language other than English (LOTE).
2 years required, 3 years recommended.
Area “f”: Visual and Performing Arts (VPA).

What are the benefits of completing the 15 AG Subject Requirements?
Meeting the A-G requirements is the equivalent of being a "college prep" and will likely be required at out-of-state and private universities you may be considering
The additional English and mathematics classes will better prepare you for community college, trade school, and the workplace
Meeting the college preparation requirements (A-G) is associated with higher placement in college-level courses, and a greater likelihood of earning a college degree or certification
Private or Out of State Admission Requirements
Students must contact the school of interest to learn more about their admission requirements. Typically, if a student has met the UC/CSUs admission requirements, they likely have met Private or Out of State requirements.
