Science Fiction and Social Commentary Essays

In this High School unit we challenged students to think critically about society's advancements and progress and allowed students to make real-world connections through unit texts, videos, and collaborative discussions. This unit incorporates dystopian, allegorical, and science fiction, and included authors Ray Bradbury, Margaret Atwood, and Robert Hayden, among others.  Through exploration of these texts we brought to light the purposeful messaging in science fiction texts.  As our final project for the unit students were asked to answer this question: 

"Write an essay that explains how at least two authors use the conventions of science fiction to critique society. Which author's message is most relevant to us today? You may choose from unit or supplemental texts for your response."
