Self-esteem refers to how we see and value ourselves as individuals. It affects our personal development, as well as our interactions with other people and our mental health. Young adolescents are likely to struggle with low self-esteem because of pressures like social media and comparing ourselves to others around us. It is important to remember self-esteem is about inner and outer beauty, and you are more than just your appearance! This video by a qualified mental health professional Jo Morton-Brown explores pressures young people face and tips to improve self-esteem.

Our identity (who we are) is often shaped by what we think others think we are. This process of thinking can often include assumptions that are false and negative. The image on the right is an excerpt from Jai Shetty's book 'Think Like a Monk' where he explores this idea further and shares ways to reflect on our identity to make sure we invest time and energy doing things that align with our values as a person.
BRAIN BOOST CHALLENGE 2! Complete the time audit as outlined below to see if your time and energy align with your values as a person.
For a week, track how much time you spend on family, friends, health, and self. Leave out sleeping, eating, and working.
Ask yourself whether you are spending most of your time doing what you value most.
If you are spending time on things you do not value, you need to ask yourself why you are doing this.
