Here are some ideas for household items you can use as pigments!
The best pigments are already in powder form - like kitchen spices! Ask an adult, and look at the spices you have at home!
Here are some that work especially well, but you can try ANY:
Mustard Powder makes YELLOW paint!
Turmeric Powder or Curry Powder makes ORANGE paint!
Paprika, Chili Powder, or Thai Red Curry Powder makes RED paint!
Ground Ginger, Ground Cloves, Cinnamon or Ground Coffee makes beautiful BROWN paint!
Spirulina makes GREEN paint!
For your base you can use: just water!
*Add more powder to make the colors darker, or less to have transparent (see-through) paints that are like watercolors!)
Fruits and Veggies can also be great pigments, and you DON'T need a base when you use these!
Frozen Berries
Thaw frozen berries over a bowl (raspberries and blackberries work best!)
Collect the liquid (you can save the actual berries to eat or use later!)
Fresh Veggies or Berries
Measure three parts veggie/berry and one part water (raspberries, blackberries, kale, carrots, and beets work best!)
Blend mixture together
Strain or scoop out the big pieces, so you are left with only liquid!
*Cornstarch (or flour) can be added to these mixtures to make your paint thicker!
Candies with a hard, colorful shell work best as a pigment! We recommend using Skittles, Runts, Gumballs, or Nerds - but you can try with anything you have!
Separate out the different colors into cups (add more pieces if you want brighter colors, and less pieces for if you want lighter colors)
For your base, pour enough clear syrup (like corn syrup) into each cup to fully cover the candies (if you don't have syrup, water will also work!)
Let the candies soak until they turn your base a beautiful color! Your paints will smell great too!
Make sure you ask permission if you are borrowing items from a family member!
Eye shadow and blush work great as pigments! Just add water for your base and mix together for beautiful paints!
Nail polish, eyeliner, lipliner, lipstick, and lip gloss can work as paints all by themselves!
