From year 7, students develop their abilities in the core areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our lessons encourage a passion for the subject, drawing on the creativity and enthusiasm of our students and their eagerness to learn.

Mathematics - 7 hours

Mathematics is the study of processes using numbers and symbols developed over 5000 years ago. Branches of Mathematics include algebra, geometry, numeracy and data handling.  Students will gain opportunities to develop problem and decision making skills in real life contexts.

Mathematics is an exciting and challenging subject which continues to develop at a rapid rate across many research areas. It has a natural elegance and beauty. Taking a real world problem and creating and applying mathematical models to aid understanding is often hugely satisfying and rewarding.

Science - 5 hours

The study of everything that is, was or ever will be and why. Science seeks to understand and find patterns within that which can be observed or measured. Science is the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things, and the knowledge that we obtain about them.

Science prepares children and young people to engage with the understanding of natural phenomena. Science aims to stimulate our natural curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way we do. It teaches methods of enquiry and investigation to stimulate creative thought. Students learn to understand the world around them and their role in that world, as well as the role that Science plays in our society.

History

3 hours

History is the study of past events and people and their ongoing impact and relevance on the world of today.  History is more than a list of facts;  it involves debate as to why and how events are connected and their relative significance and importance.

A high-quality history education will help students gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire students’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip students to ask and answer questions about the past in order to form their own substantiated view.

Geography is everything around us. It is the study of the interactions between the physical and human environment, past and present, which gives us an idea of how our dynamic world is being shaped for the future.

Spanish or French

6 hours

Students all over Europe learn modern foreign languages from an early age. Studying a language helps develop valuable set of skills: by comparing the functionality of the new language to that of their own, students gain a better understanding of  the grammar in their native language.

From Year 7 onwards we regularly remind our students of the need to have the skills which will benefit them in a Global Market. So many of our students already speak a variety of world languages and we advocate the value of these as well as the languages we teach through key stages 3 and 4 into our Sixth Form and on to University and their future careers.

If you have a strong prefernce to which language you would like to take, please inform the Head of Year.
