One of my roles as an educator is to connect my students to outside opportunities they would otherwise not have. This includes providing additional educational opportunities and resources that will allow my students to pursue a variety of paths. Below are three examples of how I strive to provide my students with access to the resources that they deserve.
In this section, I detail lessons and a field trip that I organized focused around visiting a fire station and learning about fire safety. This opportunity, which I have provided for the entire grade-level two years in a row, not only helps students and their families live safer, but also gives students a direct look at firefighters as community helpers and provides a better understanding of that career.
In this section, I outline how I have helped create and organize our school garden. From working with school and community partners, to planning a field trip to a local youth farm, to organizing a garden meditation class, access to nature at school holds many future benefits for our students.
In this section, I discuss how I have worked with other teachers, administrators, and parents to organize an outreach night for student family members to learn more about how to support their child's growth outside of school. This resource focuses on how students can benefit from informed and invested family members.
My focus in creating each of these resources for my students was to make sure that my students have access to a variety of opportunities and feel informed, supported, and empowered in their school community and beyond. While these three sources all focus on educational opportunities, they also incorporate social-emotional and physical safety aspects to support the growth of the whole child.
