Morphological Matrix is a tool that is useful to find new combinations of various parameters Or
characteristics of an item or a situation. Morphological Matrix helps to generate a number of
options and help to create change, improvements, or to generate ideas. When using the matrix, identify 3-5 elements or categories and make each idea a column headings for the idea.
Usage
The matrix is a great brainstorming technique used for creating options, generating
ideas in projects, scenario writing, and exploring unique scenarios.
Steps
State what it is you want to brainstorm.
List the different parameters or characteristics across the top of the columns on the paper.
Identify elements of each parameter.
Select one element from each column.
Combine the selected elements to create a new item or situation.
Select several combinations and continue to create new items or situations.
Write down the new item or situation for each combination selected.
Students can use a grid like the example below when doing their brainstorming.
