CaptionHub Basics
Our New Workflow
Our workflow now has two main steps: Editing and Review. There is no separate approval step which means subtitles now get published once they pass the review step.
1. Transcription
TED provides an original transcript for all TED and TED-Ed content. For TEDx talks, volunteers are able to utilize auto-generated transcriptions as a base, or create their own from scratch.
2. Translation
Subtitles are translated from the original language into the target language, using a dynamic subtitle editor. Note that TEDx transcripts must be reviewed and published before any translations can be created.
3. Review
Before publication, subtitles are reviewed by an experienced volunteer. Once reviewed, subtitles publish directly to the TED.com video player and Youtube for the world to enjoy.
Role & Assignments
Users Roles
Linguists (translators and transcribers) can create and edit subtitles
Reviewers can edit, review, and approve subtitles
Language Supervisors can edit, review, approve/unapprove, and post-edit subtitles
(Find our detailed permissions matrix here)
Assignment Limits
Linguists can claim up to 3 editing assignments at any given time.
Qualified reviewers and Language Supervisors can claim up to 3 editing and 5 review assignments at a time.
Users will have 30 days to complete an assignment. After 30 days, the incomplete assignment will be automatically released to the claimable pool.
Log-In & Profile
Apply & Log-in
For the initial log-in, all returning TED Translators will need to enter CaptionHub via our application (except for LSs and reviewers invited for the soft launch). After you've passed the application quiz, you'll be able to log in to CaptionHub at ted.captionhub.com with your TED credentials (the email and password associated with your TED.com account).
When filling out the application, be sure to select the source and target language(s) you are proficient in. Remember that translators need to be fluent in both source and target languages, whereas transcribers must be fluent in the transcription language. For instance, if you wish to translate from English to French, you should be fluent in both languages, and select both English and French in your application in order to be a linguist on CaptionHub.
If you are not yet a TED Translator, you can submit an application through the “Apply now” link on this page. We look forward to your application!
Once you've successfully passed the application, you'll be prompted to log in to CaptionHub via the TED Team login. From there, click the "Log in with your TED account" link. This should automatically log you into your new account.
