On Monday 29th July, four of our Te Aratai students headed to Japan on an international youth exchange programme hosted by Saitama City in Japan.
Jay, Ryan, Charlie, and Maxwell, along with students from Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, enjoyed language and culture exchanges, and a homestay experience.
Here are their highlights!
Maxwell: Not only did I get to experience Japanese culture, I made a bunch of Korean friends too. Now I want to go to Korea too, and go back to Japan!
Charlie: The people - everyone was really nice. It was so easy to make lots of friends.
Jay: The food! I really enjoyed eating eel.
Ryan: Being able to make new friends, both with Japanese students and the other students on the exchange.
A huge well done to our students who took part in the FAGASA Sāmoan speech competition for 2024. This year's competition brought together many schools from across the Canterbury area, including Ashburton. This year, we had five students enter which was the most of any school.
Congratulations to the following students:
Year 7 Josephine Mana-Mohan - 2nd Place
Year 10 Maofa Aso Tui - 6th Place
Year 10 Tafafa Luteru - 3rd Place
Year 11 Poutasi Luteru - 3rd Place
Year 12 Tagi Auina - 1st Place
This year we were lucky to have our students who finished in the top three at regionals head to the National FAGASA Speech Competition in Auckland.
Along with Mrs Faga and Rosalia, our team of seven travelled and represented our school and our values to a high standard. We are extremely proud of what they were able to achieve and share in our Sāmoan language.
Results of the National Competition:
Josephine - Top 10 finish in the Year 7 category
Tafafa - 4th Place in the Year 10 category
Poutasi - 2nd Place in the Year 11 category
Tagi - 3rd Place in the Year 12 category
This is an amazing achievement for our students and school. Thank you for being leaders and carriers of our Gagana Sāmoa. Thank you also to our parents, family and school for your support in the preparation of this malaga. It could not have happened without you.
