The AKC English Language Learning Homework Club
The AKC English Language Learning Homework Club began on the 29th of February, 2024. Smriti Parajuli (Year 12), Jessica Raj (Year 13), Dormay Laufiso (Year 13), and Wysdom Turu (Year 13), student leaders at Te Aratai College, as well as leaders within the Acts of Kindness Collective, are lighting the literacy candle for students and their parents through their leadership of this new initiative.
This project is designed to support new migrants and former refugees from our kura, as well as their parents, helping them adjust to the expectations of schools in New Zealand and practise their spoken English and numeracy skills for students.
Students get extra support with their homework, and parents are present alongside their children, learning some spoken English in a safe environment. We look forward to our clientele growing as word of mouth spreads about the ELL Homework Club.
AKC Homework Club Update - 2025 Plans
Initially, we started with a small group of four members, which has gradually grown to 12. The AKC Homework Club has been instrumental in helping many students, particularly in numeracy and literacy. Smriti Parajuli and Fatema Ahmadi have consistently provided guidance, creating a positive impact on the group. Many of the senior participants are making notable progress in their conversational skills. We meet every Wednesday and Friday at 3.00 pm.
Looking ahead to 2025, we plan to offer IELTS and PTE courses.
Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way
Amelia joined the AKC Homework Club as a neat, punctual, and enthusiastic learner. She consistently completed her homework and worked hard. Her dedication was remarkable—she never missed a single class. Even her sons, Anjana and Chandu, put in great effort in both Maths and English.
When Amelia started in March, her English skills were limited to a basic foundational level. However, through training in interview techniques and spoken English, she gained confidence and steadily improved. She left no stone unturned in her efforts to succeed, and today she has achieved her first dream job.
Amelia continues to attend the AKC Homework Club as her aspiration to become a chef is well on its way to becoming a reality. She is a true example of hard work, perseverance, and the value of following educators' guidance.
