STEMpowerment at Horace Mann Middle School in Miami, FL is designed to be 1) an educational space outside of school hours for students to conduct the fun activities that are not always supported by in-class curriculum, and 2) to be a mentorship program where our middle-schoolers can connect with college students and professional adults working in STEM fields.
Through STEMpowerment, students of Horace Mann Middle School will be empowered to pursue their interests, find solutions to their own inquiries, and be inspired by people in the community who see their untapped potential and value their abilities.
According to the Education Commission of the States, between 2017 and 2027 STEM jobs in Florida will grow over 17%. Despite the increase in workforce opportunity, Black and Hispanic minority groups continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields of study and in the STEM workforce. The student population at Horace Mann Middle School identifies as 75% Black and 25% Hispanic. Our goal for the STEM Enrichment Academy is for it to become a haven for learning and discovery, as well as a support system for students who are interested in STEM fields. Our aim is to bridge the opportunity gap for our STEM students of color.
