The goal of years 4 and 5 is to begin moving to the art of teaching. With a solid understanding and repertoire of effective strategies under their belt, the desired outcome is that teachers in their fourth and fifth year fully accept the success of each student and commit to ongoing learning and growth to ensure they have the skills needed to get kids to high learning outcomes. They reflect before, during, and after lessons and adapt as needed.
Around this time, it is important for teachers to feel engaged and valued. Effective collaboration that allows for reflection and refinement of strategies through formative assessment is needed to continue growing the teacher as a learner. These teachers continue to benefit from coaching cycles that tackle some of the hardest challenges in student learning. Additionally, teachers in years 4 and 5 benefit from taking on some leadership roles or planning and discussing how they can grow into different leadership roles (mentoring, facilitating content meetings and/or professional learning, organizing and facilitating book studies, etc.) within the next couple years.
