Military Background

SFC McMillan joined the US Army on the 1st of September, 1999.  After his completion of OSUT, (One Station Unit Training) at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, SFC McMillan was assigned to the 82nd Engineer Battalion in Bamberg, Germany where he served as a Combat Engineer.  Within SFC McMillan’s first month assigned to the 82nd Engineer Battalion, he was then transferred to the 9th Engineer Battalion in Schweinfurt Germany.

In 2002, SFC McMillan was deployed to Kosovo for a six-month rotation where he served in Charlie Company 9th Engineer BN, Assault and Obstacle Platoon.  SFC McMillan participated in multiple dismounted patrols and clearing operations with the German Army to disrupt smuggling acts on the borders of Kosovo. He was also an instructor for the M1 Abrams Panther (Mine Clearing Tank) and taught mine clearing operations classes throughout the Brigade’s Area of Operation. His dedication and perseverance resulted in SFC McMillan receiving the Kosovo Campaign Medal, NATO Medal and an AAM.

In February 2004, SFC McMillan deployed with the 9th Engineer Battalion in Balad Iraq in support of OIF 02-03. While deployed, SFC McMillan was assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Platoon where he served as a SAW gunner and later as a team leader.  SFC McMillan participated in many significant missions such as Operation Baton Rouge in Samarra Iraq. For his actions in Operation Baton Rouge, SFC McMillan was awarded an AAM for recovering a Turkish hostage during clearing operations on the 2nd of October 2004. He was also a part of a dismounted small kill team (SKT) and mounted route clearing platoon which resulted in multiple IED finds and enemy mortar team engagements thought the Task Force area of operation. For his hard work during OIF 02-03, he was awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal and an ARCOM for the deployment. 

In April 2005, SFC McMillan was then reassigned back to Charlie Company, 9th Engineer Battalion Assault and Obstacle platoon.  While assigned to Charlie Company, Assault and Obstacle platoon, SFC McMillan was assigned as a squad leader of the AVLB section (Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge).  While in this position, he was in charge of 8 soldiers, four AVLBs’ and over 2 million dollars worth of equipment. In February 2006, he was a graduate of the Explosive Ordinance Clearance Agent course and later was assigned as the platoon Blow in Place (BIP) NCOIC. Theater Specific IED Reduction Blow in Place).

On September 2006 – November 2007, SFC McMillan was deployed again with the Charlie Company, 9th Engineer Battalion, Assault and Obstacle platoon as a squad leader in support of OIF 04-06 in Ramadi Iraq. His company was attached to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, and 1st Armored Division. SFC McMillan's Platoon aided the Marines in constructing the Ramadi Government Center and twenty-three Iraqi police stations throughout the Task Force AO improving security in the district.  His dedication and determination resulted in SFC McMillan receiving an ARCOM for his actions during OIF 04-06.

In March 2008, SFC McMillan was assigned to Charlie Company, 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Platoon, 1st squad leader. SFC McMillan then deployed with the 9th Engineer Battalion for OIF 08-09 in Iskandariya Iraq. He served as a squad leader for a route clearance platoon during the deployment.  He was also assigned as the platoon Theater Specific IED Reduction. (BIP) NCOIC and the Company Urban Breach NCOIC.  During this deployment, he completed over 200 route clearance combat missions. For his actions during OIF 08-09, he was awarded an ARCOM for the deployment.

In November 2009, SFC McMillan was reassigned to operation sergeant for Charlie Company 9th Engineer Battalion. After a period of 6 months serving as the operations sergeant, SFC McMillan was then assigned as the Platoon Sergeant for 1st Platoon, Charlie Company, 9th Engineer Battalion. After serving 8 months in 2nd Platoon Charlie Company, SFC McMillan was hand selected from the Battalion Sergeant Major to fulfill the role as the S-3 Battalion Master Gunner.  He flawlessly planned and executed two Grafenwoehr Gunnery and one Mission Readiness Exercise rotations increasing the Battalions training ammo expenditure rate from 54% to 83% within seven short months. For this, SFC McMillan was awarded an ARCOM for his outstanding performance.

In July 2011, SFC McMillan deployed with HHC 9th Engineer Battalion to OEF 11-12 where he was assigned to be the NCOIC for Paktika Operations Coordination Center Proventional. SFC McMillan partnered with the Afghan Uniform Police, Afghan National Army, National Directorate of Security, and Afghan Border Patrol coordinating joint missions throughout Paktika Providence Afghanistan.  SFC McMillan coordinated over 180 joint patrols and disseminated intelligence reports which lead to the capture of over 100 insurgents within Paktika Afghanistan. 

In 2012, SFC McMillan was reassigned to the 5th Armored BDE in Fort Bliss TX as an Observer Controller / Trainer and Counter IED instructor.  SFC McMillan completed over 45 field training OC/T mission and over 25 deployment readiness exercises between 2012 and 2015. SFC McMillan was awarded an ARCOM for his contributions to the 5th Armored BDE’s mission.

In 2015, SFC McMillan was reassigned to the 1st Infantry Division, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Engineer Battalion, Fort Riley KS. where he was assigned as the Alpha Company, 2nd Platoon, Platoon Sergeant. In October 2016, SFC McMillan was deployed in support of the Korean Peninsula for a 9-month rotation. SFC McMillan participated in Operation Key Resolve in which he was NCOIC of 15 simulated NEO sites. Upon the completion for the Korea Rotation, SFC McMillan was assigned to be the Battalion S-3 NCOIC (S3N). During SFC McMillan’s time as the S-3 NCOIC, he was awarded the Bronze de Fleury Medal for his significant contributions to the Engineer Regiment.

In 2018, SFC McMillan was selected to attend the Drill Sergeant Academy in Fort Jackson SC. SFC McMillan graduated from the Drill Sergeants Academy in May 2018 in the top 10% of his class. SFC McMillan was assigned to Fort Leonard Wood MO where he served as a Senior Drill Sergeant in 4th Platoon, Echo Company, 2-10 INF BN, 3rd CM BDE from July 2018 through July 2021.

SFC McMillan officially retired from Army active duty services September 2021 and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for 22 years of honorable military service, displaying outstanding leadership, commendable initiative, and total dedication to the Army’s mission.
