11 September 2025: SHHS JROTC Cadet start the year remembering the brave and honoring the victims of 9/11. Nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field in an attack that reshaped American foreign policy and domestic fears.
06 September 2025: The JROTC Scorpion Raiders accepted the challenge and competed in the annual MCJROTC Talon Challenge. More than 20 schools participated with over 300 cadets in attendance. This was the first of many Raider challenges for this school year. The Scorpion Raider team is looking forward in competing in the National Raider Challenge held in Fort Knox KY on the last week of October.
15-23 June 2025: School may be out for the summer, but that hasn’t stopped the SHHS JROTC cadets from studying and preparing for the 2025 JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowls held June 15-23 in Washington. Only the top 40 Army JROTC Leadership Teams advance to Washington. These cadets represent the top two percent of all JROTC programs in the country and arrive prepared to showcase their intelligence and teamwork on a national stage. For these Scorpion Battalion cadets, the excitement of the competition is shared with the thrill of being away from home while exploring and witnessing the history embedded in Washington D.C.
05 April 2025: The South Hills High School JROTC held their annual JROTC Military Ball. This formal event requires Cadets to wear formal service dress and guests to wear formal attire. The Military Ball presents certain rules, procedures, and protocol to be observed. Cadets demonstrate the lessons they learned in proper manners and etiquette in a social setting. Learning proper social conduct is an important part of the Cadets' growth and character development. The Military Ball consists of a reception hour, receiving line, dinner, recognition of the senior Cadets, crowning of the Ball King and Queen, and a dance portion.

24 February 2025: South Hills High School JROTC Leadership Team advances to the 2025 JROTC Leadership Bowl National Championship for the fifth consecutive year. Cadets put in many hours of studying and honing their skills as a cohesive team. Leadership Team member C/1LT Johnatan Flores stated, “We accomplished our goal of making it to D.C.” Qualifying for the Championship is a significant accomplishment for the program. Cadets are excited about the opportunity to visit D.C and compete in the National Competition June 15-19.
Downtown Fort Worth -February 2025
17 February 2025: Fort Worth honored a legacy that’s as vital today as it was when it began: The 40th Annual Greater Fort Worth Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade and Rally. Originally slated for Jan. 20, the event was rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 17 due to a deep winter chill that had us all wondering if we were living in the wrong season. As temperatures began to rise, the SHHS JROTC cadets geared up for an unforgettable tribute to Dr. King’s Dream — this time with a renewed sense of purpose and community spirit.
08 February 2025: Members of the SHHS JROTC Raider team competed in the annual Showdown in Cowtown District Raider Meet. Competing in JROTC Raider competitions is an extension of the discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills learned in class.
On Saturday January 25th, our robotics team hosted their first tournament. 28 teams participated in this tournament and the competing robotics teams ranged from in and outside the FWISD school district. This was a great opportunity for the Scorpion Battalion robotics team to host an event and see a competition from a different perspective. Thank you to all participants, cadets, and SHHS volunteers for making this event a great success!

11 November 2024: 48 Scorpion Battalion Cadets represented SHHS in the annual Veterans Day parade downtown Fort Worth. The theme of this year’s Tarrant County Veterans Day Parade is Saluting Cowtown – from frontier Soldiers to space frontiers & more.
Veterans Day Facts: An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor Veterans of World War I.
10 November 2024: SHHS Cadets participated in the annual Massing of the Colors. The Massing of the Colors is a patriotic ceremony provides a living tribute to our heritage and rededicates our faith in the Flag of the United States. It demonstrates our support for the Colors of the United States of America, and for the men and women of our uniformed services under whose Colors they chose to serve. It combines the colors and color guards of Active and Reserve Component military units, ROTC/JROTC Units, Veterans’ Organizations, Civic and Patriotic organizations, including Boy and Girl Scout units from the local councils.
10 November 2024: The SHHS JROTC Cadets once again had the opportunity to attend the Dallas Cowboys game to assist with presenting the flag on the field in recognition of service members past and present for Veterans Day.
24-27 October 2024: The Army JROTC National Raider Challenge is a high intensity competition that tests JROTC Cadets’ physical fitness and teamwork. The 2024 JROTC National Raider Challenge is the 2nd annual national championship event that is being held on Fort Knox, Kentucky, from October 24th-27th. More than 300 teams from around the country will compete for the title of Raider National Champion.
The goal of the Raider Challenge is to teach students discipline, physical fitness, and motivation to succeed, regardless of what they do in life.
The purpose of Raiders is to challenge students and provide opportunities to:
Improve Physical Fitness
Develop Leadership Potential
Strengthen Self Esteem
Provide Incentives to Live Drug Free
Sharpen Communication Skills
The SHHS Scorpion Raiders have been preparing since August with high intensity physical fitness training, physical fitness assessments, and technical rope tying skills team test. 14 SHHS JROTC students have accepted the challenge to compete in this years annual JROTC National Raider Challenge.

27 September 2024: JROTC cadets volunteer at the home varsity football game against Paschal to be the honor guard to help drive school spirit. Each cadet receives community service hours and Honor Guard arch pen as a result of their volunteered service to the school and the SHHS JROTC program.

In the 23-24 SY national JLAB competition, the SHHS cadets placed 9th overall! This is an amazing accomplishment and congratulations to the SHHS JLAB team on their incredible success.
03-07 June 2024: 11 Scorpion Battalion cadets accepted the challenge and attended the 2024 JCLC Summer Camp. The camp offers a great opportunity to face their fears in team building activities and socialize with other cadets throughout the JROTC programs in FWISD. The purpose of the JCLC is to emphasize all the attributes of the JROTC program outside of the school environment. Cadets were giving the opportunities to serve in the roles of squad, platoon and company-level leadership each day, giving each cadet valuable experience at supporting their teams.
30 and 31 May 2024: The Scorpion Battalion volunteer their time to support the South Hills HS Class of 2024 graduation at TCU and the World Language Institute (WLI) held at Wilkerson-Grienes.
02 May 2024: The SHHS JROTC Color Guard assisted in presenting the Nation's Colors at the first Fort Worth Police Department Criminal Justice Program for High School Students graduating class for SY23-24. Some of the special guest in attendance was The Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker, Chief of Police Neil Noakes, and FWISD Superintendent Angélica M. Ramsey.
The Color Guard typically consists of 4 cadets, but can have as many as 5 cadets and as little as 3 cadets, but always consists of at least 2 rifle bearers and the American Flag. The cadet carrying the American flag commands the Color Guard. The cadet Command Sergeant Major is responsible for the training of the Color Guard and maintaining the unit and national colors.
The Color Guard can support a wide range of events including school events, district events, public events, sporting events, community events, parades, opening ceremonies, drill meets, graduation ceremonies and Veterans’ Day assemblies. The Color Guard aims to support as many events as possible each school year.
19 April 2024: Across FWISD, each school's cadet from the JROTC program participate in a formal Pass-In-Review. This is a time-honored ceremony that dates back to before the Civil War. It honors the cadets’ hard work and dedication and renders honors to our Area Manager and guests. Present during the ceremony were high school administrators, teachers, friends, families, and local civic leaders.
10 April 2024: Students at South Hills High School and the JROTC program traded in their desks for a driver's seat on a Special Operations water craft on Wednesday as part of a virtual reality experience from the U.S. Navy.
Navy recruiters visited SHHS to talk about STEM career opportunities, scholarships, and to showcase the “Nimitz” which is a new mobile, state-of the-art virtual reality experience.

28 March 2024: South Hills High School Army JROTC competed at the Mesquite JROTC Vex Robotics Competition and placed fourth out of thirty teams. The competition helped the team to qualify for the 2024 VEX Robotics World Championship to be held in Dallas, TX, April 28-30. This is the third consecutive year the team has qualified for World’s. The Top 160 JROTC Robotics Teams are invited to showcase their skills in the Championship. Cadets are excited about the opportunity to compete in the competition.

Fort Worth MLK Parade 2024
19 February 2024: Rumbling down Ninth Street, the music of school marching bands shook the streets. SHHS JROTC cadets followed as they honored the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Residents came together to celebrate the civil rights leader at the annual Downtown Fort Worth MLK Parade on Feb. 19.
The parade was scheduled for Jan. 15 but was postponed because of cold weather.

27 January 2024: The Color Guard and Raider teams competed in the annual Waco High School Drill Meet. More than 300 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets represented 20 high schools at this year’s competition.
22 January 2024: The JROTC Program for Accreditation (JPA) is used to evaluate secondary educational institutions and JROTC Instructors, as defined by public laws, contracts, Army Regulations, and USACC policies to ensure compliance with minimum program criteria. The JPA inspection consists of the following: Continuous Improvement Plan Presentation, Service Learning Project Presentation, Color Guard Performance, and In-Ranks Inspection. Out of a score of 100%, the SHHS Cadet scored a 97.25%. Congratulation to all the SHHS Cadets for there outstanding dedication to maintain our programs Honor Unit with Distinction.
An Honor Unit with Distinction (HUD) is one that has demonstrated exceptional performance in all areas of program operation. In order to be awarded this rating, the JROTC program must score between 90-100% on the annual Unit Report, and 95-100% on the JROTC Program of Accreditation.
23 December 2023: SHHS JROTC Cadets once again participated in Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl festivities. The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces annual bowl game was held at Amon G. Carter Stadium at TCU and honors the enormous sacrifices that America’s military personnel have made on the battlefield.
09 December 2023: SHHS JROTC Robotic Team competed in the annual Mesquite JROTC VRC Tournament - HS (Mesquite Invitational). JROTC cadets and students alike design, build, modify, and program robots in JROTC invitational events and blended VRC competitions. Cadet-lead teams compete throughout the VEX Robotics Competition Season with the goal of Attending VEX Worlds and/or the JROTC National Championship.

Scorpion Battalion Blood Drive / 17 November 2023
The FWISD JROTC program Cadet volunteers from all the district high schools were on the field at AT&T Stadium on Sunday 12 November 2023 as part of pregame festivities before the Cowboys-Giants game. One hundred twenty FWISD JROTC Cadets carried the flag out on their shoulders and then unfurled it on the field for the presentation of the national anthem in front of more than 90,000 fans.
11 November 2023 - Fort Worth Veterans Day Parade
“Saluting TCU Warriors” was the theme of the 2023 Tarrant County Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. Participants and FWISD JROTC Cadets formed up in the Fort Worth Panther Island Pavilion parking lot, and marched down North Forest Park Blvd. along the Clear Fork of the Trinity River.
13 October 2023: JROTC cadets again volunteer at the varsity Homecoming football game against Brewer to be the Honor Guard and Color Guard to help drive school spirit. Each cadet receives community service hours as a result of their volunteered service to the school.
13 October 2023: JROTC common spaces are in the process of being renovated to create collaboration spaces for learning and student interaction. Moderate renovations will be applied to various locations within the school to meet the twenty-first century learning model. Renovations will include reclaiming or repurposing space to support Career and Technical Education.

10-13 October 2023: This is it! Lace up your sneakers and warm up for what may be the toughest part of this unit. The SHHS cadets are ready to tackle exercises that test their physical ability. Each one requires endurance, speed, strength and flexibility.
The Cadet Challenge starts with taking each cadets height and weight and five exercises that consist of:
1. V-sit reach, or sit and reach
2. Curl-ups
3. Pull-ups or flexed arm hang
4. Shuttle run
5. One-mile run/or walk

22 September 2023: Soldiers from the III Armored Corps at Fort Cavazos, spent the weekend showing off weapon systems and equipment to the Fort Worth ISD JROTC Cadets 22-24 September 2023 at Texas Motor Speedway as part of the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 and Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 NASCAR races.

21 - 22 December 2022: SHHS JROTC cadet had the unique opportunity to present the National Colors and service flags for the Armed Forces Bowl Luncheon and Armed Forces Bowl game Baylor vs Air Force. Seven SHHS JROTC cadets volunteered to participate during winter break. Their dedication to duty and complete professionalism contributed to the overall success of presenting the nations colors at both events. Each cadet that volunteered their time will receive earned community service hours
18 November 2022: Thank you to all 120 volunteers that gave blood at the SHHS JROTC Carter Blood Drive. This service learning project was coordinated by SHHS JROTC cadets. A big thank you goes out to all the SHHS JROTC staff leaders for making this event possible!

27 Octobert 2022: Congratulation to Mariani Aguiniga for her promotion to Cadet Captain. CCPT Aguiniga earned her promotion due to the constant contributions to the SHHS JROTC program. Her outstanding work ethic displays the attributes of a JROTC Cadet and future leader as a contributing citizen.

Each year, we provide more than 440,000 units of blood products to meet patients’ treatment requirements. Carter BloodCare’s services include collection, processing, specialized laboratory testing, storage, and distribution of blood and blood components.
21 October 2022: SHHS cadets conduct the Cadet Challenge. The Cadet Challenge is the physical fitness test facilitated by the United States Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. It provides an introduction to the necessary behavior required to achieve specific goals regarding physical fitness.
The JROTC Physical Fitness Ribbon (N-2-2) will be presented to cadets who receive the 85th percentile rating or better in each of the five events of the Cadet Challenge Program
The JROTC Athletics Ribbon (N-2-3) will be presented to cadets who receive the 50th percentile rating or better in each of the five events of the Cadet Challenge Program
13 October 2022: SHHS JROTC Raider Team practices the infamous one-rope bridge task in preparation for future FWISD Raider Challenge competitions. The SHHS Raider Team will also compete during JROTC drill meets as the physical fitness team. All cadets who participate in Raider team will have a chance to strengthen their leadership, improve on their fitness, and participate in competitions against other school Raider teams. These cadets are dedicated, motivated, and ready to take on the toughest challenges.
13 October 2022: New VEX Robotics season, new game, and new members. Maria Rangel is the newest member of the JROTC Robotics Team and is tasked with the responsibility to ensure the newly constructed robot is in working order.
13 October 2022: First year cadets partner up to compare leadership skillset worksheets. Group activities promotes peer interactions and gives young cadets a chance to lead from the front and practice soft skills. Effective leaders are expert communicators and listeners. They’re self-confident and self-aware. While technical skills and experience are important, you won’t progress until you master soft skills.
27 September 2022: 3 South Hills High School JROTC cadets show leadership attributes by leading the Cadet Creed and Scorpion Battalion Chant. At the beginning of every class period, cadets are required to know and recite both creeds.
22 September 2022: SHHS JROTC cadets volunteer their time to support the South Hills HS Football team as the Honor Guard. Each JROTC cadet volunteering receives community service hours for their valued contributions.
