TANF

Texas Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program gives cash aid and services to eligible needy families and is designed to help needy families achieve self-sufficiency. Families that apply and qualify for ongoing assistance receive money each month to help pay for housing, food and other necessary expenses. The amount of a family's monthly assistance payment depends on a number of factors, including the number of people who are eligible and the special needs of any of those family members. The income of the family is considered in calculating the amount of cash aid the family receives.

TANF is for families with children age 18 and younger. Families who can get this help have little to no money or don’t have a way to get money. A family can be: parents and their children, or relatives caring for related children.

Qualifications:

•The amount of money the family has.

•The value of things the family is paying for or owns.

•The amount the family pays for child care and child support.

If a child’s parent/guardian gets TANF, the parent or relative must agree to:

•Train for a job or look for work.

•Follow child support rules.

•Not quit a job.

•Not abuse alcohol or drugs.

•Take parenting skills classes.

•Get vaccines for their child.

•Make sure their child is going to school.

Section 8 Housing Voucher

The Housing Choice Voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.

Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs).

A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit of the family's choice where the owner agrees to rent under the program. This unit may include the family's present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the PHA. A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the PHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. Under certain circumstances, if authorized by the PHA, a family may use its voucher to purchase a modest home.

If you are interested in applying for the Housing Choice Vouchers program, please contact Fort Worth Housing Solutions at 817-333-3400 or apply online at https://www.fwhs.org/how-to-apply/#HCV.
