At The Leadership Academy at Leonard Middle School, students are given the opportunity to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. They are assigned/able to choose an instrument their first year and are given instruction on that for as long as they are in the program.

We do not like for students to move around on instruments because it will cause them to move backwards to an extent. They will have to learn new skills and habits for them to be successful. This also affects instrumentation in the ensembles. In order for bands to be well balanced, there must be a certain number of students playing a particular instrument. Without a proper balance, it can cause the quality to go down.
