“It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data.” - Sherlock Holmes in “A Study in Scarlet” by Arthur Conan Doyle
Which students in my division are struggling emotionally right now?
Are the students who are struggling having issues in just one class, or with all of their teachers?
Are the behaviors that the students are displaying developmentally appropriate?
How can I best support a student that has been referred to me?
How can I best support teachers in student pastoral care?
What are the underlying causes of student behavioral issues?
Data could include teacher referals, parent requests, or pro-active outreach based on social-emotional survey data.
Two such survey tools are Steer and Skodel. These data can be monitored by admin, counselors and teachers to identify students who may be at risk.
Data from STEER is broken down into four categories
Self-Disclosure
Trust of Self
Trust of Others
Seeking Change
These are further broken down into General (outside of school) and Contextual (inside school). Student who have a 'polar bias' (they are very high or low on the scale) may be at emotional risk.
Counselors usually triangulate based on multiple data sources, including teacher observations, personal classroom observations, conversations with the students, teachers, and parents, survey data, and more. These come together to create a Data-Informed decision on how to best support the student.
