WHCI Dance Program also offers students many dance opportunities outside of class. Our extracurricular, student-led clubs span many different styles of dance, for example:
Bhangra
Kpop
Soca
Dance Hall
Hip Hop
Tap
Contemporary/Lyrical
Modern Dance
etc.
Our Dance clubs often rehearse in the morning before class, after school or lunch time and perform in school assemblies, the Annual Talent Show, and many other performance venues (as many as we can find!). Every human enterprise is dependent on good leadership for its success. It is so important that countless books have been written about it, workshops are held in all major cities for all sorts of businesses to help teach people about it and how to be better at it and it is one of the top priorities of employers to find potential employees that have it!
Leading a dance club is an excellent way to begin developing these crucial and sought-after skills in a unique and creative way! All clubs are student-led and all student leaders must successfully complete an 8-hour leadership course. Within this course, we dissect the qualities of leaders and work to define what leadership qualities are most valued and most effective by reflecting on leaders around us and what makes them good leaders. To effectively lead a dance club your own peers is a challenging task and requires not only knowledge of leadership skills and abilities but also of many other subjects, such as:
Motivation
Communication
Discipline
Time Management
Self-Evaluation
Running an Audition
Running a Rehearsal
Creating and Teaching Choreography
Preparing for a Dance Competition
Preparing for a Dance Show
At the end of the course, students are well-versed in all of the above subjects and keep up their skills by meeting with their groups once a week and meeting with their fellow leaders and Ms. Jankul-Tavchar once a month to review and update their knowledge and experience.
