Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies: Teaching and Learning for Justice in a Changing World
Culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) is "teaching that perpetuates and fosters linguistic, literate, and cultural pluralism as part of schooling for positive social transformation." (Paris & Alim, 2017, back cover). There are 4 key elements:
"Valuing community language, practices and ways of being
Schools are accountable to the community
Curriculum is connected to cultural and linguistic histories
Sustaining cultural and linguistic practices, while providing access to the dominant culture"
(California Department of Education, 2020)
