Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
Culturally relevant pedagogy is the “pedagogy of oppression … committed to collective … empowerment” (Ladson-Billings, 1995a, p. 159). There are 3 tenets:
academic success
cultural competence
critical consciousness
Educators hold students to high academic expectations and excellence. Culture is used as resource to make meaning of everyday problems and experiences. Educators help students to cultivate a sociopolitical consciousness in order to critique the dominant discourses and norms that maintain inequities and to take action to right the social injustices (Ladson-Billings, 1995a).
This book comes out on October 15, 2021. It is a compilation of featured essays by Gloria Ladson-Billings about Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP):
