Culturally Responsive Teaching
Culturally responsive pedagogy "uses ways of knowing, understanding, and representing various ethnic and cultural groups in teaching academic subjects, processes, and skills." The components of culturally responsive pedagogy include:
academic achievement
social consciousness and critique
cultural affirmation, competence, and exchange
community building and personal connections
individual self-worth and abilities
ethic of caring
(Gay, 2018, p. 52)
Students are Ready for Rigor and independent learning within a cocoon of affirmation, validation, instructional conversation, and wise feedback.
There are 4 core practice areas of culturally responsive teaching
Awareness (sociopolitical consciousness)
Learning partnerships (trusting relationships)
Information processing (intellective capacity)
Community building (safe and caring learning environment)
